Consistently decent, nothing to write home about

I go to Pearls in my Upper Westside neighborhood about every six months or so. It's "signature" is a free carafe of wine with your meal --- not great wine but the gesture is appreciated. The other evening I ordered their beef and vegetables in brown sauce --- nothing outstanding but certainly a... read more

I came here today for Vday dinner bc my husband chose the restaurant. I expected the worst when I went through reviews while waiting for my food to arrive. I'd say... Glad I came here!!! We were seated on the side which was a bit cramped because there was a baby seat behind me. Squishy. The waitress was very attentive... More

I reviewed this neighborhood Chinese restaurant in October and labeled the review "consistently decent, nothing to write home about." I went again with two friends visiting NY -- this time for lunch. The waiter was churlish, chiding my friend for sitting at a table other than the one he had suggested; I arrived just as he was giving her a... More

I visit this place with friends every time income to New York. It's really a place just for locals because it's definitely off the beaten track for tourists. It's pretty much standard stuff and oddly I always seem to enjoy the starters more than the mail course. Last night I had the fried pork dumplings at $5.95 and my friends... More

Pearls bills itself as Hunan and Szechuan, which I associate with strong/hot flavours. We ordered delivery and the food was fresh, abundant, but bland beyond bland. A Five Chinese Flavors eggplant, had hardly one flavor..... The Hot and Sour soup, again, nor sour nor hot. So a very average meal. Delivery was super efficient and courteous. Average seems the best... More

The food is really good, and delivery is really fast. The problem with Pearls is the inconsistency of portion size. Sometimes there are 6 prawns in my dinner, sometimes there are 3. For $13.95, that's a pretty expensive dish. We used to order from Pearls at least once a week, but then they started shorting us on ingredients. When I... More

I've been going to Pearls on Amsterdam and 99th Street for many years. The food has always proved to be good consistent chinese/american fare with an accent on Szechuan flavored dishes. It is family friendly.

Pearls can be jammed with neighborhood people, but my opinion is not all dishes are terrific. I have found some to be very bland for my tastes, and I stick to just a few menu items. Little Bit of Everything soup, Hunan pork, Chow Fun. Lo Mein. The lunch is reasonable. Some of the dinner specials I feel are overpriced.... More

My husband and I went here for dinner one Sunday night. It was very quiet because it is the week of July 4th and the city is very empty of residents. We had the fried pork dumplings, crystal shrimp dumplings, egg roll, crispy shredded beef and singapore rice noodles. The dumplings, sauce and egg roll were excellent. The beef was... More

Ate here twice within a few days. Both times, I loved the food, but found the service to be surly/neglectful
