Want to be in the know... this is the place. A small gem off Madison Avenue. The owner is at the helm nightly. Classic French bistro fare, with great service. The true attraction is the regular guests, a who's who...

In a city that boasts a wealth of culinary options, sometimes it is the small out-of-the-way places that offer the best dining experience. Bistro Chat Noir is New York's hidden gem for an excellent meal in a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. I discovered Chat Noir through a badly-disguised version of it in my favorite novel ('PROVENANCE'), but the complimentary account... More

I wanted to love this place because I love the name, the location is great and it looks wonderful from the outside. We were seated at one of the tables that ran along the middle of the Bistro, in between the main rows of tables. We continuously had people and waiters walking past us all evening. Sitting at this table... More

A lot of walking found me using Trip Advisor to decide on a restaurant for lunch near the museum area. Chat Noir looked promising, so I tired it. The prices on the menu seemed high, but then I noticed the fixed price lunch for $30.00. I had a very good, thick vegetable soup, a nice piece of baked salmon served... More

Delicious food..risotto seafood was excellent. Small portions but tasty. Excellent service though tables are a tad close together for my liking. Seems a busy neighborhood spot.

Our first night in NYC, and we asked the Essex House concierge for a recommendation for something quiet and casual - with fabulous food. Bistro Chat Noir delivered on all counts. The decor is a little tired, but the friendly and attentive service makes up for that flaw. The wine list is small, but what is there is good as... More

Stopped by for a lunch after walking up 5th ave shopping. We ate alfresco on a beautiful day in NYC. The French onion soup and mushroom soup were delicious. I had the burger perfectly done is a french bistro manner. My wife had the Mac n cheese rich and flavorful. My daughters split the halibut which was AMAZING! We finished... More

This bistro is situated in the basement of a NY townhouse nestled between Fifth and Madison Avenues. Prices, particularly for the wine, are high, in keeping with this prime location close to museums and high end boutiques. We had decided on an early dinner and excepted to find the restaurant quiet so we could chat, how wrong can one be?... More

Food was mixed, my "cajun chicken" being very good, and my wife's ravioli (yes, this is a French restaurant I believe) being tough, tasteless, and dry. Desert was great. The restaruant was a little noisy, but acceptable. Service was good.

Oh, my. We walked in after checking out sidewalk menus on several other places in the area. Very nice decor - clean, crisp white linens, nice glassware and good cutlery. Menu was varied but focused largely on classical bistro cuisine. For lovers of frites (french fries) and extraordinary bistro-style steak this is a fine place to enjoy a couple of... More
