Went here on the recommendation of a friend for a light afternoon snack. Was not disappointed. It is in the University Heights area where there are a number of eating establishments. It is a hole in the wall with a small dining area (lines form all the time). Menu is on blackboard with a large variety of things (too many... More

This ironically turned out to be one of our best meals in San Diego, the menu is vast and to someone like ourselves that do not know Mexican food very well, it was a bit hard to choose but what we went for in the end it was very tasty. I would highly recommend trying this place, there is nothing... More

We actually went to the larger restaurant on Adams Street, which isn't that far from the one in University Heights. Parking is just as much a nightmare. But once you get inside the food is worth it. I had a blueberry mojito on happy hour while the wife had a beer. There were actual blueberries in my drink and it... More

I grew up on the Texas-Mexico border, so my expectations are high and this place delivered. Get the calamari taco now. Thank me later.

Once again,Trip Advisor steered us to a fabulous hole in the wall we NEVER would've found. This Texan Mexican food lover was skeptical about a California joint getting such good reviews. CREAMY guacamole, grilled fresh veggies, and an AMAZING homemade salsa bar came at a super-low price. There's limited seating, self-service, but if you want big servings of GREAT food... More

While in San Diego for business, I felt like Mexican but didn't want to drive to far. After reviewing Trip Advisor, El Zarape came up. The place itself was a little hole in the wall with about 3 tables, it was obvious they catered to the yong student take out crowd. Nonetheless the food was very good, service super quick... More

For some reason the only location for El Zarape listed on Trip Advisor is the very small, mainly carry-out place on Park Blvd. We've gotten food from there and it's very good, but try the other location for El Zarape on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights and you'll find a totally different experience. It's much more a full-size, sit down... More

Having lived in SD for many years and being spoiled by the mexican food choices, we had wrongly overlooked this place for a while- glad we came back. It's tucked away in City Heights and is very unassuming, but worth eating at again and again. Truly everything is fresh, filling and tasty. I love that they have wholewheat tortillas and... More

A bit off the beaten path, in a residental area, this small dining establishment has excellent Mexican food. Is it a dive, probably...is the food AWESOME. You bet. Have the burritos's shrimp and lobster, if it's in season. The combos are tasty and filling. And their green salsa.....exceptional.

Wow, never had anything like it! I had the salmon burrito and it was delicious! The more I bit into it, the more I enjoyed it. I was a bit disappointed they don't have the lobster burritos for a time being since everyone raves about those. But next time, I'll be back to try them for sure! My bf had... More
