My husband and I had our son visiting UC San Diego and wanted to go out for some great sushi. We found this restaurant on the recommended places by students (when their parents are paying!) so we gave it a try. When we saw it was in a tiny strip-mall, we almost didn't go in but are SO glad we... More

OK, so I've been in Japan enough times that I have certain opinions about sushi and sashimi. It's all about selecting the best fish and presenting it nicely, plus some atmosphere. It's not about strange fusion California rolls, or tourist-friendly tempura, or trendy clientele, or post-ironic service. Sushi Ota is in a prosaic strip mall, but inside it's Japan. The... More

We were really impressed and came twice during our week in SD. Must must reserve, busy at lunch and busier at dinner. Our favourite was the double double tuna roll. Not cheap but it is worth it. You'd never think such a place could be found next to a 7-11

Once you are get past the fact that this restaurant is located in a strip center next to 7-11, you'll soon find an oasis of sushi! The place has become even more popular, so plan on making a reservation if you want to eat here. I wanted to try something other than sushi and ended up getting the steamed fish.... More

Anything you order will be of the highest quality, but we go for the sashimi. Octopus, salmon, maguro, and all of the featured sashimi is going to be amazing! Shrimp moving on the plate made the tourists sitting next to us squirm a bit, and the sea urchin is not my favorite, but my husband loves it. The service is... More

This place needs a reservation- for lunch or dinner. Everything here is fresh. On Mondays they have special rolls and sashimi. I love coming here to get the Diego Roll with fresh chopped jalepenos and the Salmon Crunch roll.

Great food, consistent. Reservation required and often need to make well in advance. Tucked away gem that many have found.

This japanese restaurant has not the best location, just near a gas station but as soon you are approaching the place you can tell that is a very popular restaurant in town, we were on our summer vacation and we made a reservation which I recommend but talking about the food is just great, the seafood is fresh and the... This is not where you eat if you are hungry. We ordered some take-out and by the price of the food I thought it would satisfy our hunger. When we arrived at the hotel and i looked what was there I was shocked. Although the sushi was tasty there wasn't enough for one let alone two. After eating the sushi... More

We usually rely on Tripadvisor for advice on restaurants and they didn't let us down with this recommendation. We arrived for lunch at about 1:30 and the place was packed! We only had to wait a few minutes for a table to clear and then we were in for a treat. My husband likes sushi and sashimi, I like maki.... More
