About Average

25 years ago, this place was great. Now, it is just average as other places serve the same food, and they are just as good. Nothing wrong with the food this visit, I had a carne asada burrito, and it was ok, just not great. The place is an institution in San Diego, and if you are here you... read more

Around since many years, El Indio is THE place in San Diego for excellent Tex-Mex food at very good prices. Very casual, but a place everybody should go to.

I've been coming here for years....like since the late 70's. It use to be fantastic but today, while good, wasn't something that I'd go out of my way to recommend. Maybe there's been no change. Maybe it's just that every other Mexican restaurant has gotten better...but even Roberto's or Las Posas makes a better Carne Asada Burrito. The Cheese Enchilada... More

We just had to have food from this restaurant, since it had been featured on Guy's Big Bite. What a disappointment. Perhaps, we chose the wrong entrees. Not impressed!

This is definitely a no frills kind of family run place. But great food & a real find for authentic Mexican fare. I'll definitely return.

Yes- diners, drive ins and dives filmed an episode on this place. There was more cheese and salsa in the carne asada burrito than meat and the tostada was mostly lettuce and a smear of beans and some carne asada. The prices are really good and the parking is excellent as they have their own lot across the street. I... More

A friend of mine and his husband (who is from Mexico) recommended El Indio. We also looked forward to eating at El Indio as it has featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. The food was plentiful, tasty and very reasonably prized. We also had the opportunity to try Mexican soda (I don't recall the name but it was cinnamon... More

El Indio was the first stop after my boyfriend and I got off our plane in San Diego. I had not been there before, but his dad suggested it. I ordered two soft chicken tacos. My bf had two beef tacos. They were wonderful. Great flavor, big enough, filling. Chips were awesome! We will definitely go back next time we're... More

Great Mexican grill on the edge of Old town. A 1940’s diner where you order at the grill, then wait for your order and take it to a table. There were a lot of locals there which is a good sign. This place has been featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. It is inexpensive and has a variety... More

Anyone who has lived or visited the area will at one time or many times have visited this historic place. A hole in the wall really but that is what makes it special, great food at reasonable prices. Where all teens growing up in San Diego had late night taquitos.
