Anthony's Fish Grotto's was established in 1946 by Mama Catherine Ghio. It set and continues to set the standard for fresh seafood dining in San Diego. Mama believed it letting the freshness show through and not using overwrought and fussy preparations. Fresh seafood simply prepared. The waterfront Anthony's sits atop piling over San Diego Bay. The views and sunsets are spectacular. The large dining room can accommodate families and large groups and the Lounge/bar area is perfect for that more intimate dining experience. The menu features an array of seasonal fresh catches along with a multitude of favorites from Fish n Chips to Lobster Tails. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are available.

Love fresh sea food, and Anthony's has it.

The food is soooo good, and if you can get a table by the windows it only enhances the experience. What a way to spend an afternoon or evening.

We used to eat at Anthony's on a regular basis, but quality of food has declined and the prices are outrageous. Skip the restaurant, and order the clam chowder from the Fishette. Sit outside and enjoy the view of the harbor.

Stopped by for an early lunch with the family after a boat tour and was very happy with the whole experience. Although only 11 am, the staff was hard at work and quickly seated us at a good window with a view of the bay. We were quickly served our drinks. The menu had some "quick" choices and two of... I have been dining at Anthony's on the Bay since I was 10 years old in 1971 on our annual Cali road trips from Colorado. This delicious seafood restaurant situated on the water offers something for everyone. The fish and chips are top notch and warm rolls are addicting! The bread bowl clam chowder and salads are equally exquisite! They... More

Great views, next to the midway ship and great Bob Hope statute, real voice tribute to the armed forces. Few blocks from outdoor mall on water. The food here is top notch.

Thank you for dining with us and taking to time to write your comments. Anthony's location on the bay is prefect for taking a break from sightseeing. You can have a quick snack at the Fishette, enjoy happy hour in the bar M-F 3:30 -6:30, or lunch or dinner in the dining room. We've got you covered! Hope you enjoyed... More

Thank you for dining with us and recognizing the effort we take to offer a nice array of fresh seafood and lots of other seafood choices. Many of the trendy restaurants may offer a few select seafood dishes but Anthony's is a traditional seafood restaurant, offering seasonally items from A-albacore to Y-yellowtail. (no Z fish!). Best of the fresh right... More

Driving down from LA excitement mounted in what were about to see. Nice drive and to say the least we were hungry! Anthony's was a logical choice to meet a good friend for lunch who hails from San Diego before heading to the sites. The food was superb, I would recommend the Salmon Reuben simply delicious. My son's feasted on... More

Dear Philip: thank you both dining with us and taking the time to write your kind comments. The Salmon Reuben is a fairly new addition to our menu and is very popular. Sounds like you had a great time in San Diego and that dining at Anthony's (as it has for so many over the past 70 years) was an... More

Wonderful prices, quality food and right on the water! The best bread to go along great fish and a beautiful view. Conveniently located near attractions and downtown.

Dear Laurie: Thank you, both for the kind words and for dining with us. Anthony's reputation has been built on fresh quality seafood, simply prepared and served in a casual atmosphere. We know many of our guests have been busy seeing the sights in San Diego and want to feel comfortable dropping in for dinner. We're also not the braised... More

Calamari is my absolute favorite and it's hard to find it cooked right/tender. Anthony's is PERFECT. Never had rings so large. We moved on to a crab & shrimp Louie salad. My husband had the traditional mussels, he said they were tender and delicious.

Thanks for your kind comments. My grandmother, Mama Ghio, like you, was very picky about her calamari. She liked a nice size, tender and with a light crisp batter. That's what we try to achieve on every order. Does it always happen, no. Does it happen 98% of the time, you bet! Noticed you are from Arizona, we at Anthony's... More

The food is simply okay, there are so many other fish places that serve better food in San Diego! Recommend the Fish Market, by the MIDWAY or the Fish Shop in Pacific Beach.

Dear Michael: thanks for taking the time you write your comment. In the restaurant business, to last nearly 70 years, you have to embrace continuous improvement and strive to be better than "just okay". The more specific the feedback the better. Some people, not you, leave nasty comments such as " tastes like an old shoe". Want can you learn... More

Grabbed a quick bite on the pier at Anthony's. A little over priced for fish and chips but the view was nice eating on the pier. Watch out for the pigeons and seagulls, they like to steal your food.

gofishanthonys, Owner at Anthony's Fish Grotto, responded to this review

Sounds as if you grabbed a bite at our Fishette, the quick service patio dining option at the embarcadero location. Despite multiple signs that say "don't feed the birds" guests continue to do so, thereby training the birds to "fly in" for food. They get bolder all the time. A little surprised at the comment regarding the price of your... More
