Anthony's Fish Grotto's was established in 1946 by Mama Catherine Ghio. It set and continues to set the standard for fresh seafood dining in San Diego. Mama believed in letting the freshness show through and not using overwrought and fussy preparations. Fresh seafood simply prepared.
The waterfront Anthony's sits atop piling over San Diego Bay. The views and sunsets are spectacular. The large dining room can accommodate families and large groups and the Lounge/bar area is perfect for that more intimate dining experience.
The menu features an array of seasonal fresh catches along with a multitude of favorites from Fish n Chips to Lobster Tails. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are available.

Great view of the Harbor

This restaurant has a terrific view of the harbor and is very centrally located. I wouldnt say the food was awesome, but it was very good. I had a coconut encrusted tilapia and my husband had the swordfish. We both though our fish was a bit dry. However, I'll give 5 stars to their white clam... read more

We were short on time before a tour - no time for full-service lunch. We used the "to-go" Fishette counter outside for some to-go fish taco's and coconut shrimp. Delicious food. The pineapple juice in the cole slaw was delicious -- best restaurant slaw I've had. Fast service, with outside tables for a quick sit-down lunch.

Thank you for dining with us. Overall I'm glad to read that you enjoyed your visit to Anthony's. Our New England Style clam chowder is an old Mama Ghio recipe that has been handled down 3 generations. It is lovingly prepared (starting at 2 in the morning) by Don Pepe Diaz, our commissary chef with nearly 50 years experience cooking... More

We visit Anthony's every couple of months. If we have guest's from out of town we always take them down to the waterfront for lunch or dinner at this iconic restaurant. I love their fish and chips.

Dear Susan: Words cannot express the gratitude our family has for such long time and loyal customers as yourself. Sadly, probably starting next year, you'll have to get your Fish n' Chips fix at our La Mesa location. (A beautiful spot on a scenic private lake.) The Port of San Diego has determined that Anthony's Fish Grotto is no longer... More

Amazing view of the harbor but the food is just ok. I had a plate with 4 types of fish prepared 4 different ways. 3 of the cuts were breaded and fried. Not crispy but somehow dry. The mixed veggies turned out to be 4 baby carrots.

Thank you for dining with us. We do have a wonderful view and in 98% of the time the our food is a match for our view. You had the Shore Combo featuring Fresh Grilled Salmon (not breaded) Fresh Petrale Sole, and Halibut (very lightly dusted in cracker crumbs to retain moisture in this somewhat dry fish). None of the... More

Always a "must-stop" place to visit when in San Diego. Classic San Diego seafood fare, it's been around since the 60s, I that I'm aware of. Great for celebrations or group dinners, the staff is well equipped to handle any size party. Food is fresh and seven by pros.

Dear John: your review hit all the right notes for what we been doing for the past 70 years: fresh seafood simply prepared, nothing to fussy; a dining room that can accommodate multiple large parties while having an intimate dining area for couples and conversation (our lounge/dining); and a seasoned crew that knows how to take care of guests. We... More

Not only was the view of the harbor absolutely beautiful, the food was amazing. The wait staff was pleasant and very informative on the items offered on the menu. The clam chowder was to die for and he,the waiter gave us a cup free of charge since it was our first time visiting/dinning. I never would have thought to make... More

Thank you so much for the wonderful comments. I'll be sure to share them with our staff as they are such an affirmation of why they come to work each day. I'm delighted you enjoyed the grilled crab and cheese sandwich on sourdough. It's been an Anthony's favorite for nearly 50 years. Thanks again and hope you return soon. Regards. More

Dear Cokey: There are lots of Happy Hours around but few with both the view and food offered at Anthony's. We love it when visitors, tired after visiting the Maritime Museum and the Midway, see Anthony's Happy Hour sign and drop in to get refreshed and reinvigorated. It makes for a great break! Thanks for coming in. Regards. More

We were in San Diego for the weekend staying at the Wyndham Bayside which was also on Harbor Drive. It was a quick walk across the street on a Saturday night and there was no wait. We were hungry and didn't want to drive anywhere so this hit the spot. Prices were reasonable and there were a lot of menu... More

The clam chowder was great and the pan-seared salmon and cod were very good too! We went mid-afternoon after enjoying the USS Midway. Convenient location - great view of the harbor.

Thank you for stopping in and dining at Anthony's. We are certainly convenient for visitors to the waterfront and strive daily to provide the quality of food and service that makes us so much more than a "tourist" restaurant. Our team appreciates you recognizing the effort that goes into serving each of our wonderful guests. Regards. More
