Dragged my husband to the North End on a rainy afternoon promising him pizza, dessert and espresso. Flipped a coin to see if we would head to Mike's or Modern. Modern won. Luckily we got there during an ebb in the customer line; it picked up while we were eating. As first timers, it was a bit overwhelming trying to... More

Modern Pastry was not my first choice...I was in Boston for a conference and before dinner I saw all these pastry boxes for Mike's. So of course, I wanted to try Mike's cannolis. We upon us walking up to the door the young man looked the door in our face...oh well off to Modern's. I ordered a chocolate dipped traditional... More

I have had Mikes in the past. Great cannolis but this trip I was referred by our hotel concierge to give the competion a try. Glad we learned about MODERN!! The competition in the other block was pricier, slower and lacked in display of product . At Modern you can actually SEE all of their products as you wait in... More

Wow! You must visit this bakery while visiting the North End. There is something here for everyone. Macaroons, Carrot Cake, Cheesecake, Almond Cookies, Napoleons.... Etc. We ordered our favorite ricotta Cannoli. They were outstanding. We eat a lot of Cannoli in South Philly, and I must say these are right up there with the best. Service was quick and friendly.... Lines were much shorter than at Mike's Pastry. No reason to wait so long and the pastries were excellent. I hear pastries here are better than at Mike's.

On the advice of a local, we chose to stop by after eating dinner in the North End. So glad we did! Though stuffed, our party of six each chose a different dessert and we added a cannoli w/ricotta just to try it...had we eaten there, we would have purchased additional items for the road because everything was THAT good.... Very busy pastry shop with a few tables available. The line went quickly and was well worth the wait. Friendly and efficient service.

The line was outside to the corner on a Saturday night in July. It moved quickly. We got 4 large and 4 mini cannolis. 50 cents extra for chocolate chips-same on the minis. The cannolis were OK. We enjoyed them.

Our family went to Modern Pastry Shop for a snack in the midsts of a self guided walking tour. The lines were long and cash only but they moved fast. We got cannoli, a boston cream cupcake and a chocolate dipped anise cookie to split. The food was delicious. There were no open tables on the main floor so, we... More
