Loved by the locals

Any restaurant that is jam-packed with local families is going to be good and this was no exception. Generous portions of unassuming Cuban style dishes. Too full to test the desserts!

I needed a Cuban fix and suggested this spot based on reviews. Maybe it was the anticipation building during the 45 minute drive across town, but El Oriental de Cuba was not up to our expectations. A Cuban sandwich was okay, but the roast pork was tough and the bread was ordinary. Black beans and rice came as 2 separate... More

I'm staying in Boston for the next while and popped in here for a bite to eat. It's a low key place, nothing fancy but we had heard it was good! It was a very tasty meal, it filled us up and it didn't cost the earth. It does get very busy so be prepared to wait. I'd definitely go... More

This has been a favorite restaurant of mine for over a dozen years. This review is long overdue. Simply put, they prepare and serve large portions of genuine and delicious Cuban food in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, all at a reasonable price! FOOD: I like to have several appetizers if I am taking a small group to El Oriental.... More

I am on a low salt diet, and this was no place for me. I asked carefully, received a heavily salted meal, sent my food back, but it came out again heavily salted. My gluten free friends also had trouble because its almost all fried food. But the couple of us in our party with no dietary requirements loved it.... More

Had a delightful lunch on a cold wintery afternoon. The surprising highlight was their chicken soup. It's hard to get excited by such a mundane dish but I have to say it was perfection. Service was great and the ambiance was cozy. Did not have the Cubano but it looked really good. The Cuban coffee was excellent.

On a bitter day, a cup of hot chocolate and a classic Cubano were welcome and delicious. Service was speedy and gracious. next time we are in Boston we'll go back for another sample. Easy to park, too, and lots of interesting decor.

A classic cubano is a beautiful thing. There is not a consensus among cubano eating fans as to if the sandwich was invented in Florida or Cuba. But one thing is true, and that is that most places outside of Florida really F-it-up when it comes to the classic Cubano sandwich (never been to Cuba so I can't say). A... More

I don't know Cuban food all that well, except when it comes to Cubanos. I've had them in many settings with large local Cuban populations, and love the sandwich. El Oriental does it right. Their Cubano-especial with everything is a delicious, fresh, and filling lunch. The service is very pleasant and efficient. I'll eat here once every other week.

Staying in Jamaica Plain

Neighborhood Profile
Jamaica Plain
This Boston neighborhood feels like a distinct community unique and separate from the bustle of other areas. Beautiful Victorian homes, restaurants with an emphasis on being eco-friendly and providing local and organic food, and a large Hispanic community. Visit Centre and South streets for restaurants, cafes, and little shops. The Arnold Arboretum is a beautiful, large green space well worth a visit if you venture to JP.
