Decent meal

It's not up to the hype, but the food is tasty, the service is swift if slightly abrupt, the prices are reasonable, the portions large, it's genuine malaysian and not a fake.

Coming from Penang, Malaysia myself for a visit in Boston got me all craved up when I tried something local away from my country. Being born in Penang, Malaysia and having that particular taste instinct in my tongue I was amazed at how good this place is. Not only the food but the ambience itself moved me back to Malaysia... We were looking for something different for dinner near our hotel. We came upon Penang, a Malaysian restaurant. My wife & I have never had Malaysian food before. The food was similar to Thai & East Indian food. We ordered the Pork Dumplings as an appetizer, Basil Fried Rice, Calimari & a Pad Thai like dish. The food was good,... More

The food here is spicy, flavorful, and they do not hold back on the ingredients that make it good---especially seafood. The prices are reasonable, and the portions quite large! The service was quick & the waiter was helpful when we were indecisive on what to order. Try random things that you might not normally get. There's a huge variety in... More

Penang has a very cozy, dimly-lit interior, very nice for dinner. The servers were very polite, we ordered noodle soup, chicken, pad-thai and the vegetarian casserole and we received our food fairly quickly. They were all delicious and the servings were generous, particularly for the noodle soup and chicken. They re-filled our glasses of water several times without us asking.... More

Penang is a fun and cozy restaurant located in the chinatown area of Boston and a very short walk from the Hyatt that we were staying at. Neither of us were real familiar with Malaysian cooking so after reading reviews we decided to start with the Roti Canai app that came with a delicious dipping sauce. For entrees I went... More

Don't go for the dishes you know and recognize from every Chinese place. Go for the original Malaysian tastes - they are very unique and interesting. And if you love spicy hot, this is a heaven. I like the Roti canai. The coconut rise with mixture of meats.

The Penang that I had feasted at was more vibrant, crowded and lips smacking great. It is now quite a bit tired looking plus the novelty had worn off. The food was not as great as I used to salivating over, perhaps the original chefs have all jumped ship. Penang is still ok as an alternative to Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese... More

The decor doesn't project fine dining (it's casual), but the food is wonderful. The crab Rangoon, duck casserole, and pad thai were all just terrific, exceeding expectations. No complaints about service or prices. Convenient location between theater district and Chinatown. Wine and beer only but a decent selection.
