One thing ... done very, very well

James Hook & Co. does not have a giant menu. If you want a fantastic lobster roll that is packed full of flavorful delicious lobster meat take the time to get to the waterfront in Boston. The lobster had only a light dressing and no fillers to hide a lack of lobster. I think the reviews are... read more

We were in Boston for a week, and we tried chowder and lobster rolls all over the city. This was by far my favorite place. The soup was hot, creamy, full of clams and not overly spiced. The lobster roll was fresh and sweet with just the right amount of mayo to accent the meat. We went during an off... More

Visit Boston several times a year from the UK and this has become a regular lunch spot. It's no 5 star restuarant, but more of a wooden hut, with a warm family service, excellent fresh lobster and a sense of being quaint old Boston. Set on the waterfront walk and close to financial district it gets very busy with the... More

I heard a lot of good things about this place, but in my opinion, I've had better. I'm not saying their lobster roll or clam chowda is bad, because it wasn't at all. I felt like this one had more mayo and the clam chowder wasn't as creamy as ones I've tried in Boston.

one of the best reasons to go here is that it is pretty much comes as you are, you can eat in or take it to go but you are not going to find anything fresher than james hook, another reason is that if you haven't been to boston's waterfront lately you should do it, walk around see the sights... Irene, one of the best things about this review is that I can tell that you know your lobster and that you share a deep appreciation for it. I hope that you find yourself walking around the waterfront soon, and if you do, I hope that it involves another visit to our place. Best, John M., Owner More

I went there with my girlfriend for lunch and we hat a double stuffed crab cake, clam chowder and a lobster roll. Everything was really tasty. As it is a shop to get seafood which does some small meals, I consider it not as a restaurant. More like snack bar or something like that. But therefore the quality of the... More

I paid special attention to every eatery we walked by in Boston as to the lobster rolls presented. Everyone raves about James Hook so I had to do a credible comparison. We ordered the large lobster rolls ($17 vs $14 for the regular size) and a bowl of clam chowder. As you will see from my photo we got a... More

There's nothing that gets us going more than lobster, so of course we're going to make sure that you get the most that you can. If you're ever in town again, I hope that we get to see you --- I'd love to know how we stacked up in your comparison! Best, John M., Owner More

If you're looking for a delicious lobster roll and bisque at affordable prices in Boston, this is the place to go. They sell fresh food for takeaway, but you can also dine inside or at one of their outside tables. You can't go past the bisque and lobster roll (available in 2 sizes). The rolls are generously filled with lobster... More

The lobster roll was, okay. The feel was that of a chain style restaurant masquerading in a contrived homespun feel. Some may enjoy this type of eating experience; however, it did not resonate with me on a personal level.

I'm sorry to hear that we just didn't resonate with you on a personal level and that you didn't enjoy the roll so much. Still, we are a local business, and try to surround ourselves in that spirit. FYI, We have been here since 1925, third generation family business and this is our only location. Best, John M., Owner More

This place is DELICIOUS!! The lobster salad has chunks of great lobster that was being brought in fresh right in front of our eyes. The lobster bisque soup was outstanding. Creamy and flavorful. I am back home in Miami and am still thinking about that lunch! I believe they do mail order. Might have to look into that to satisfy... More

You're absolutely right -- we do mail orders, so consider your lobster salad cravings satisfied! It's fantastic to hear that you're still dreaming of it though, especially because lobster dreams are the best kind. If you're in town again, I hope that we see you again! Warm wishes, John M., Owner More
