There is a definite reason why Sotto Mare is rated #6 restaurant in San Francisco: it's amazing seafood. It should be rated #1 when it comes to that! I went here for my first time and immediately took an oyster shooter with an IPA on the side. Good god those were delicious. Do yourself a favor and order the cioppino,... More

Went there based on TripAdvisor reviews, and, like the title says, good, but I've had better. My wife had the prawns and scallops, and I've got to say, the scallops were cooked very well. Seared, but not overcooked, as often happens. My seafood risotto was good, but just didn't have that wow factor that i was hoping for. This seems... More

Do not miss out on an opportunity to experience this phenomial restaurant. The seafood linguinie was just divine and I'm saddened that I'm not a local to make this restaurant my favorite place to dine! Totally impressed - highly recommended! The food came out super quick and we watched the chefs prepare everything fresh! A MUST try in San Fran!... More

So glad we read up on Trip Advisor for places to eat while in San Fran. We would have completely overlooked this gem in the Italian district. It was so good. Quaint and loaded with charm. Not one of those touristy places on the wharf. Food: To begin with the sour dough is hard to resist. We began our meal... More

Dinner out with family before a night of laughter and fun. I enjoyed the Prawns Saute so much I felt like licking me sauce right off my plate. The sauce consisted of garlic, garlic, and herbs. The prawns were large and sweet. My cousin enjoyed the lobster ravioli so much, she ate the whole thing except one ravioli which she... More

I saw that they were ranked 6th on Tripadvisor and was in the area, hungry so dropped in. Often eateries get lax when they have 'made it' on common review sites but this couldn't be further from the truth here. Its maintained its small family feel. Lovely staff and great food. Super fresh and tasty. Get amongst it!

If you like Italian seafood, then you just woke up in heaven. Been there twice in a year. The ciopino is excellent! The smoked salmon appetizer was buttery. The scallops cooked to perfection. "Rich" the manager was there greeting everyone and he was affable and seemed to be a great guy. I would go there again. WARNING: Make reservations way,... More

The featured dish that everyone raves about can only be enjoyed properly as a pair. As a solo traveller intent on crab I tried the crab diablo... it was deliciously drowning in butter scallion and chili... it's good that I like spicy. I worked hard to deshell my crab. The highlight was the atmosphere and chatting with my neighbors at... More

Decided to eat here because of all the great reviews! Sotto Mare didn't disappoint! The waitress suggested the Cioppino and Sand Dabs as meals and suggested our family of 3 share them family style! I reluctantly agreed to the Cioppino as I do not normally care for a seafood soup! I am so glad I decided to try it! Both... More

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
