Best Cioppino ever! Bread was delicious and great wine selections. Husband had a pasta dish that he enjoyed! Atmosphere was ok. We were seated in the basement and it could use a little updating. Upstairs near the kitchen seemed very hot so we were glad to be seated downstairs. They do take reservations. Highly recommend.

Excellent place found by chance. Hoegaarden beer on tap and great seafood. I had oysters and snapper, my wife had something else which I don't recall, but I tried it and it was great.

This was such a great little restaurant. Seating is limited, so you will need to make reservations. Staff was very friendly and the food was delicious! Their cioppino was the best I've had and is big enough for two.

A must visit restaurant , great service and great display of cooking talent. Some wait time might be necessary , definitely worth the wait , prices are very reasonable compared to fisherman's wharf .

I have only one big complaint about Sotto Mare: I wish it were in Seattle so I could eat there all the time! On a recent trip to San Francisco we discovered Sotto Mare and fell in love. I had the seafood fettuccini and it was to die for. The portion was huge, and unlike other places where you have... More

We went without a reservation on a busy weekday evening and waited outside for a seat. It was incredibly busy but the staff were friendly and efficient. We shared the Blue Cheese Wedge salad as a starter and went with the Crab Cioppino for two as our main. I was a little reluctant at first, but the melody of seafood... More

We read the reviews, we waited for an outside table, we ordered the famous Cioppino. It is the best Cioppino we have had and we have had a lot of Cioppino in San Francisco and other areas. It is the sauce! We also ordered fresh oysters, steamed clams and mussels (you will ask for more bread for sauce dipping), and... More

Went to Sotto Mare whilst in SF for a work project with my colleagues. Shared the Cioppino with another and was blown away by the flavours. The Restaurant is loud, packed and smells like heaven. The service is friendly and relaxed. Absolutely loved it. Disappointed only that it is 12 hours flight away.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
