Based on all the positive TA reviews, we had my birthday lunch at Sotto Mare yesterday. SF is the land of "Best Sourdough Bread in the Universe." but Sotto Mare served a bland, over-processed bread that I couldn't eat. We ordered the Cioppino -- the top billing entree on the menu. At first it tasted Ok but half way through,... More

We're in SF several times a year, and during this trip decided to go based on a review in local media. They advertise the "best damn cioppino" in SF, so we had to give it a try. Sat at the counter in front of the cooks so we had a bird's eye view of the prep. Had great tasting oyster... More

My wife and I had an excellent experience at Sotto Mare. They do not take reservations for 2 people but we put our name in and had a glass of wine at the restaurant across the street. 45 minutes later we had two counter seats in front of the action in the kitchen. The cioppino for two was excellent and... More

We have just spent five days in San Francisco and this was the very best meal we had.The seafood was simply delicious, and I just wish we could get the same such tasty seafood dishes in the UK.If you are visiting, this is definitely the place to eat seafood...The Cioppino was so delicious! So flavoursome, the depth of flavour in the stock was the... Well what can I say, my wife and I shared the cioppino and left nothing behind. We sopped up up with bread to the last drop. It was filled with various seafood but the stew is the king. An outstanding flavorful seafood stew that manages all the flavor balances perfectly. the place is small and fills up quick so we... More

What a delightful meal we had....we sat at the counter and had the cioppino...plenty to share for two but so delicious you almost want your own. Don't look for atmosphere.....very informal, tiny space, but who cares with food like this served by a hardworking friendly staff.

We enjoyed great italian seafood in this restaurant. Loved the soup, spaghetti, grilled prawns, and risotto. Salad was probably only "ok" though.

Now, this is what an old, authentic seafood restaurant should look like....walls plastered with photos, marble tables, a narrow room, noise...a San Francisco treat. We started with succulent oysters on the half shell. Shared a huge bowl of cioppino and it lived up to its billing.."the best damned crab cioppino." An assortment of seafood in a perfect broth brought gastronomic... More
