We saw this place on trip advisor and decided to try it. So glad we did it was fabulous! You cannot book but this was not a problem as they give you a buzzer and you can go to the pub next door for a drink while you wait on a free table. We sat at the bar which was... More

We love sesfood and decided not to leave San Francisco without having some .... But we looked for a local restaurant and not the touristic one on the waterman wharf pear.... And we found. Great localiry, excellent food and good prices.

The Ciopinno was soooo worth the 90 minute wait and the walk up a very steep hill in heels. The wine was very good. It was nice meeting the owners. The service was excellent and very friendly. San Francisco is such a great place for people who love the "foodie" experience.

This place has it all: good location, great staff and excellent food! We waited almost 2 hours to be seated but it worth the wait. I'd definitely recommend this place to my friends!! Order the seafood pasta! It's delicious!

We found this restaurant to be great fun. An Italian Seafood place in North Beach, it kept its promise to have the "best damn cioppino"--full of all kinds of seafood atop a bed of pasta and swimming in a yummy tomato broth. The iceberg lettuce and tomato salad was OK, but not what this Bay Area resident has come to... More

Went to Sotto Mare based on the Trip Advisor ranking. Was a little surprised of the small upstairs space and counter seating, but the seafood was excellent and exceptionally reasonable. The Cioppino was excellent. It was full of shellfish, more than enough for two people and had pasta tossed in also. In other restaurants, I would have thought the pasta... More

Two of us waited 40 minutes for a table with no reservation. We were given a buzzer that would ring when a table was ready, which was nice, and told where to go for a drink in the meantime. We were eventually seated around 40 minutes later downstairs. Downstairs isn't quite as nice as upstairs. We were asked if we... More

We waited nearly two hours for our spot at the place, and then we were rushed out of there so they could close. Still, the place is famous for its cioppino, and it doesn't disappoint. However, there are so many good places to eat in San Francisco's Little Italy that I think I won't stand in line here again.

What a wonderful place! I adore sea food and this is the only place I guess where they really know how to cook it! It's always a delight to have dinner there!

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
