Second time was not the charm

It was a Friday night, after work rendezvous with my wife for a somewhat early dinner in the city. Located in the Financial District, right at the foot of the Transamerica Building, this was my second visit to this smallish Italian restaurant. My husband and I ate here last week. We had flown from the East Coast the day before and the hotel concierge said we could only get reservations here at 9 pm. We showed up at 6:45 pm, explained that we were very jet-lagged and were seated right away. The food was excellent but pricey.

It was a Friday night, after work rendezvous with my wife for a somewhat early dinner in the city. Located in the Financial District, right at the foot of the Transamerica Building, this was my second visit to this smallish Italian restaurant. My first visit to Chiaroscuro had been about three years beforehand, and I was curious how the quality... More

My wife and some relatives had a great meal on a Friday night at this restaurant. The service was attentive, knowledgeable but not over bearing or intrusive. The food was excellent, from the amuse bouche to the desert. I had a starter based on scallops that was a really interesting blend of Italian and Japanese styles, my secondi was some... More

Went during the week and sat against the concrete bench. Food was great and I really enjoyed the pork and the presentation. Can't say that any tables were really dialed up too much but the acoustics of that concrete must really reverberate within the restaurant. Wow! See for yourself - maybe it was just a weird night.

We always like dining out in San Francisco, and Chiaroscuro was no exception. It is pricey, but the choices and execution are flawless. We chose the three course prix fixe and were not disappointed. We also chose the wine pairing, which was exquisite. We would definitely return.

This restaurant has a great location given the proximity to the Transamerica Tower great energy wonderful ambiance and I thought the service was excellent; however, I did not like the three course menu, I thought the food was slightly above average and I thought the portions were small. I really think the restaurant should return to the menu of old.

Decide to try Italian in SFO . A friend recommended this place. Mix feeling about it. Very noise, could not have a conversation across table. Service hit and miss. Food .... Decomposed tiramisu?1980th style. Trittico Di pasta were good, taste and cooking. Tasting fish appetizers were fishy and still burping the anchovies roll. Kobe beef????? Hard and tasteless . This restaurant is a popular lunch spot for people working in the Financial District who want a great place to relax and enjoy an authentic Italian meal. A group from my office recently did just that. The atmosphere is great, although with the restaurant full it can get very noisy. The name of the restaurant, Chiaroscuro, is Italian for clear-dark,... My husband and I were very excited to eat at Chiaroscuro. We had spent three weeks in Italy this summer and one of the winery owners we met highly recommended this restaurant. We booked our reservation well in advance for a Sat nite. First issue, the restaurant doesn't offer valet parking. This is probably not an issue for folks coming... More

I should have written this review long long time ago.. but for one reason or another I never got around to it.. Sorry to Alessandro who is the owner and chef at this great place.. He has in no way asked me to comment on his restaurant, but I had such a nice/unique experience at the restaurant that I have... More

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
