Delightful Dinner at Cafe Zoetrope

We had a delightful meal at Cafe Zoetrope. Service was very good. I am impressed also at the staff's ability to walk those stairs from the kitchen to bring us the delightful food. We enjoyed their special gnocchi for the day; as well as their very good Argentine short ribs. My husband had... read more

This was the last stop on a walking food tour. You cannot help but be impressed by what has gone on in the building itself. The staff was very friendly. We were served bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to start. The bread was very fresh. We had the Pasta Pomodoro Basiilico which was spaghetti with a fresh tomato... More

We have only been to Cafe Zoetrope twice, but each time it felt special. Both times we arrived just as they opened for lunch and both times the waiters put us at a nice corner table. The menu is short but still was difficult to choose. This last trip we both settled on the mufaletta and caesar salad. And of... More

We went into Café Zoetrope initially out of Coppola curiosity and intending only to have a drink. The place looks great. And we got tempted by the good old fashioned Italian menu. Big mistake. We both ordered very basic pasta dishes, hard to do badly you hope, but they were truly awful. Badly cooked, coarse and poorly seasoned. Stale bread... More

Whilst on a trip to San Fran we ventured to Cafe Zoetrope based on curiosity and mixed reviews. Met at the door by a pleasant manager who advised a 30 min wait for a table. No problems, we sat at the bar. The bar attendant, a sour faced young lady with the personality of a house brick dumped the wine... More

Tonight my wife and I needed simple fresh food of normal proportions and this place hit the spot.. We were amazed to learn about its celebrity connection but more to the point the Mexican waiter was charming and willing to discuss our needs and the wine, A nice touch was that they split thier signature Caesar Salad into two as... We had the Picada Tray and several of the tasting reds. "Tasting wines" is the way to go. $8 per glass or 3 for $15. Yep...i went for 3 for $15...you do the math. Good atmosphere..you can sit at the window and watch the rest of the world go by. Food was excellent..good variety in the antipasto and plenty to... More

Went here for a business dinner and was very happy with the food, service, wine, and - most of all - the atmosphere. Cafe Zoetrope feels like a restaurant in Europe - it is small but not crowded inside. The setup is friendly and inviting - we ended up talking to the people at the next table over for much... More

My husband and I were staying close by and decided on a rainy night to duck in here for dinner based on the cafe atmosphere. It is very European in feel and artwork covered the walls. If you are a film buff, you will find items that will catch your eye. We were seated in the front part of the... More

Like a European cafe--outside and in. Tall walls smothered in photos, menu sketches, and film memorabilia from Coppola's eponymous Zoetrope production company. Wine was good, the cheese platter a bit wimpy for the price...those were the skinniest two slices of Manchengo I'd ever seen. We didn't have a full meal, but did enjoy the wine. I felt like I paid... Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
