If there is a line, then there must be something good about it

People hate the long line and unpredictable business hours. But there is a reason that the owner open for business as they please - what they sell is so good. We wait in line for about 30 minutes, which is not bad and the the line gets longer after us. To make the waiting worth, we had three egg... read more

Came to San Francisco multiple times over the years. Had gone to Golden Gate Bakery twice before only to find the "We Are Closed For Vacation" sign on the door. Today they were opened. Really tiny hole in the wall place. At most, maybe six customers can fit inside at a time. Waited in line along the sidewalk for almost... More

Small place on Grant Ave but famous for the best “egg custard tarts” in Chinatown. Go early, take out only, it truly is the best place for the tarts. The service is fast and you have to know what you want.

The egg custard tarts that everyone raves about are okay. I wouldn't go out of my way for them, though. Except that I did 3 times: 1st time, locals looked me right in the eye and then kept cutting in line in front of me. Gave up. 2nd time, waited in line 20 minutes, was only 1/3 of the way... More

I was just walking by with my girlfriend and we just found this huge line in front of a closed bakery (at 2:30pm). Everyone in the line was just waiting for it to open. We had 4 egg tarts and some other stuff. The egg tarts were amazing! I had never tried them before so I was surprised. It's worth... More

On Thanksgiving morning, our first one in San Francisco, my husband waited in line over an hour to buy this bakery's famous egg cremes. I shopped and popping and out of businesses as he finally purchased 8 of them. Before eating our early Thanksgiving dinner he had already eaten 6 of those. He said they were one of the best... More

I love egg tarts and when I asked around about places to go in San Francisco, Golden Gate Bakery was suggested to me. I was able to get to Chinatown via cable car from Union Square. The walk was short and I found myself out front. They don't allow photos inside so I took a photo of the storefront. The... More

If you have time and likes egg tart, this is the place to go. They make the best egg tart in the bay area and worth the wait. They close for vacation often without notice.

The queue was long, waited an hour for the egg tarts and until our turn, was told ''No more egg tarts (Apparently, no egg tarts was sold on that particular day) !''. Should have put up notice earlier so that people wouldn't waste their time queuing. Bad service.

Absolutely historic factory in a very old building in the alley. This is one of the "tourist attraction" places that our hotel suggested. Oh~ yes, many tourists all show up here, some even came with tour guide. It is a very small shop/factory, making fortune cookies. It is interesting to see how the machine operates. Only 3 staffs needed to... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighborhood decorated with colorful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighborhood.
