If you are open to a fixed menu with no choice, you will love this place. The chef gives you what is fresh, available and delicious. The wine list is more extensive than I expected though don't expect cocktails. Service was perfect, noise level was too - great for an intimate dinner with a significant other or close friends. We had very delicious food here -- the lamb was particularly excellent -- but the portions were very small and it was a fairly pricey meal. Rather than having larger portions I wish there were one or two more items (courses) on the menu -- even if they are small.

My sister recommended this place for our recent trip to San Fran from Australia.. It did not disappoint! It was a 4 course set menu which changes weekly! We had entree: sea scallops ceviche and a sweet corn soup with jalapeños then white bass braised in white wine. The dessert - peach and hazelnut clafoutis! So yummy!! You will need... More

i love this spot. the chef has the smallest kitchen i've ever seen but cooks up a masterpiece each time we go. its usually pretty tough to get reservations as this is a popular and very small spot but worth the extra time to plan in advance. we have eaten there about 4 times and each time is outstanding. we... This place is so cool! I booked a reservation for my parents and as a celebration of our first day of vacation. It was an amazing experience. The food was spectacular, the wine very nice and paired well with our meal, our server was very sweet (laughed at my parents jokes, good for her) and accomodated our needs well and... More

My cousin arranged a dinner for the start of a family reunion so we did not know what to expect. This was truely fine dining for $52, prix - fixe dining. The sea bass just melted in my mouth. Others complimented the veal was well.

We selected this restaurant as it was close to our hotel and well rated by Tripadvisor. We found the fixed price menu (the only option) to be a little pricy. The food was well presented and very tasty. While the restaurant was very small it had a cozy atmosphere. If the booths were all taken groups of 3 or less... More

Book way ahead for a table at this tiny, and just a little funky, spot on the ground floor of a hostel in downtown San Francisco. Like its space, the menu is small, but everything our party of four had was wonderful from the salads to the desserts. Petrale sole is ubiquitous in the Bay Area, but it's hard to... More

I have been visiting Canteen over the years, and had dinner there tonight. It is truly a tiny gem of a place serving the most consistently excellent food in a super cool setting with warmth, grace and kind hospitality. I am so impressed by the quality, care, and passion that Chef/Owner Dennis Leary (DL) puts into his preparations! I first... More

We had dinner at Canteen after having read many excellent reviews about the place, so with very high expectations. The place is small, but cozy. The Menu Degustation for that night was not impressive, being my Roast Pork the star, and quite expensive. The service was ok but not outstanding.
