Colibri Mexican Bistro lies in the heart of San Francisco's bustling Theatre District, just a block west of Union Square. Spanish for "hummingbird," Colibri combines the simplicity of authentic family recipes with fresh, high-quality ingredients to bring diners unparalleled, delectable Mexican cuisine in a charming, turn of the century cantina setting. This warm and inviting eatery is reminiscent of Mexico City restaurants of the 1900's, decorated with classic Spanish paintings and accentuated by a vast collection of uniquely shaped and rare tequila bottles. Filled with energy, Colibri projects black and white 1940's Latino-film clips at the front of the house, while the open kitchen in back provides glimpses of its colorful cuisine in different stages of completions. Boosting a knowledgeable staff and attentive, sociable management, Colibri is dedicated to providing a memorable dining experience for both tourist and locals alike.

Great Mexican!!!!

Colibri was recommended to me by a colleague and it was worth following the advice! The dishes are upscale Mexican cuisine and they are happy to spice to order (based on your desire for heat - mine is not high and their recommendation was spot on). I have been eating at this restaurant for more than a decade and it has never failed to provide a lovely meal and a great experience. Servings are good to generous, and everything is very fresh, with complex layered flavours. Excellent selection of tequila also.

One of our days in San Francisco was a very soggy one so we decided to spend the day shopping and walking around Union Square. We decided a margarita would lighten up the afternoon so we researched margaritas on TripAdvisor and found Colibri just a block or so from Union Square. It was perfect! We arrived for Happy Hour and... More

We were staying in Union Square and a girlfriend recommended this location as a good place to meet for dinner. The food and drinks were great and we never felt rushed as we sat and eat for several hours talking and enjoying ourselves. The next time I am in SF, I will definitely go back.

We dropped by this restaurant last minute (no reservation) so we had to order and clear the table within 45 minutes. We loved everything we ordered. Chicken, fish, pork, desert, Spanish coffee and most of the service was excellent. We will definitely come back.

Returned here after a few years on my annual SF trip. Remember liking the restaurant and was reminded why. First, the food was exceptional--one of the best duck preparations I have had; WAY better than you would expect from a casual Mexican restaurant...this is at the Topolobampo (Rick Bayless) level. Ate at the bar. The bartender (I believe name Carlos)... More

We wandered in here last night when it started raining and were seated with our baby despite having no reservations and the restaurant being fully booked. As we were walking to our table, we saw fresh guacamole being made which looked amazingly fresh. We ordered it and were not disappointed. Our daughter dislikes avocados in general but actually ate the... More

A great place with sensational food. The service was a bit average though...we waited about 10 minutes to even get our drinks order taken, but it was all worth the wait.

If you're looking for Mexican food in SF, you can't go wrong here. Everything is top notch. Service is OK, but who cares when the food is this good.
