Ame should aim for Terra

Recently we enjoyed Terra in St.Helena - and so we decided to visit Ame (same owners) after some time of not having been there. The reception desk was kind and helpful - as we requested a location with more privacy and not placed between some noisy tables. Neverthelss there is some absence of... read more

We wanted to take our out of town guest to someplace nice, fun and/or trendy in the city. Located in the St. Regis Hotel by the newly renovated SFMOMA, you're drawn into the modern lobby. We started with interesting cocktails at the Ame Bar in the lobby ($22 for a mediocre Manhattan) then were escorted to our table in the... More

This restaurant was in our hotel and we had a nice comfortable dinner with our teens in the lounge bar side that we really enjoyed. I would definitely return… particularly loved the recommended Tempora Poke. Delicious. I’ll be craving that for some time.

I wanted this restaurant to be perfect. And it was, in some ways. It is beautiful, and really quite intimate for a hotel restaurant. The service was very, very good. But the food is missing the oomph it needs to be fabulous. We started with the special appetizer of fois gras on daikon radish with kumquat preserve. The fois Fraser... More

We had the signature Black Cod dish plus the special soft shell crab. Both are excellent. On a Sunday night, not crowded at all. Waiter was pleasant but not too attentive once a few tables were added. Focus is on the food, which was light in flavor not filling at all. Beignets for dessert was average. Worth another visit.

Came here for Christmas Day with my family. We are all picky and they blew us away. Wander into the St. Regis for after dinner drinks during the holidays. They decorate it BEAUTIFULLY. Everyone still talks about it and it's now MAY.Breakfast is also good. Drinks and bites at the bar don't disappoint either.

This is a very clever restaurant. It's in a hotel but we wouldn't downgrade it because of that. In some way's the plates have that austere pared-back Japanese aesthetic but the room is warm, small and sophisticated. We had a crudo special which was tai with olive oil and sea salt - exquisite and relying pretty much only on the... More

We don't usually go for hotel restaurants but we were tired on arrival in San Francisco and it was the easy option. And it was a good option too. Great food and good service. We've marked it down slightly on ambiance and atmosphere - not that it was bad it just didn't quite have the buzz of the Boulevard restaurant... More

The food at ame is exceptionally well prepared with fine attention to detail. The flavors are rich and multi layered. The fusion of different cuisines is impressive. I strongly recommend the tasting menu with wine pairing. The downside of ame is the service. It was ill paced, terse, and at times bordered on condescension. Our party of well educated foodies... Perfectly cooked noodles. Rich broth. Succulent pork belly. I am a Ramen aficionado and this is one of the best in the world! Really -- had ramen in Tokyo, L.A. and lots of other places.

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
