fantastic food

My husband and I tried out Axum based on previous reviews and we were so glad we did. Fantastic food at very reasonable prices, in a simple yet relaxed atmosphere. This was our first taste of Ethiopian food and we have been trying to find another restaurant that matches up to Axum ever since! If... read more

We just love visiting this restaurant, and go every time we visit San Francisco. It's not fancy, by any means, and the decor looks more like a take away than a restaurant, but the service is always friendly, the food full of flavour and the prices cheap. We love to have the platter for two, which is massive, comes with... More

Every time I'm in San Francisco I try to make it to Axum Cafe. They make this one mushroom dish called Kintishara that is amazing! It's mushrooms diced and simmered in tomatoes, onions garlic and authentic Ethiopian spices. I haven't found this particular dish in any other Ethiopian restaurant so I come here to get my fix.

If you are looking for good authenic and affordable Ethiopian food, this is the place for you. We ordered the vegetarian platter for five. The portion is large, the favors fantastic, and everything had just the right amount of spice. If you want fine dining with table clothes and fancy silverware, go someplace else. If you want really good food... More

My friend suggested Ethopian Food and I was not sure what I was getting into. Axum is on Haight Street but off from the madness of Haight/Ashbury. I was surprised to find street parking readily available, this is San Francisco. The Entrance was unassuming but when I arrived the server greeted me quickly. We said we were hungry and the... More

Great Ethiopean restaurant with very friendly and attentive staff. The food was very tasty and fresh. Eating with your hands is fun and I would eat there anytime again. We had a combination platter for two, with vegetarian and meat dishes on it. Also enjoyed the Ethiopean beer. Very moderately priced. No frills and a rather small menu, which always... More

We staggered in after our long flight, without a booking, but were fortunate to find a table. The guy out front, who seemed to be doing everything from clearing tables, to welcoming guests and taking food and drink orders, was very welcoming, but understandably rushed. We ordered a platter for two, and were intrigued as we hadn't tried Ethiopian food... More

If you're on a budget, this is a must stop. Judging from the other diners, this seems to be a local favorite as well. Service slow but pleasant and decor is upscale cafeteria. Food is well seasoned and plentiful - just don't expect gourmet quality at these prices. Tab for 2 with wine or beer about $30

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
