The Grand Old Dame of Union Square

Sears has been around forever and this point is made very clear. The right wall on entering is plastered with photos and newspaper critiques of the restaurant through the ages. Even our waiter was beyond the standard retirement age. It is one thing to be old, it is another to be tired, and we did... read more

I was staying at the Chancellor Hotel, next to Sears Fine Food. Classic place. It offers good breakfast and prices compares to other places nearby. (average price is $14). Noticed that most restaurants in SF charge a 3% to 4% to cover the health insurance of employees (?? whatever it means) plus the 9% tax plus a " suggested tip"... More

Had breakfast by myself on a Saturday morning. Sat at the counter of this classic 1930ish restuarant. The restuarant interior is worth seeing. I had Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. It was delicious with a good sized portion of smoked salmon. My coffee was kept hot by the friendly counter waiter. The house favorite breakfast was the pancakes. This is... More

Enjoyed a good breakfast at Sears. Waited about 15 minutes to be seated on a Saturday morning. Very hustle-bustle inside, but nice menu, generous portions and speedy service. We had the Swedish pancakes and corned beef hash/eggs/hash browns. Really liked the hash browns. Fairly pricy, but worth the experience if you have never been to this SF institution.

I first came here 40 years ago as a child on vacation. Best breakfast in SF. The 18 silver dollar pancakes are a tradition. Each time I come back to SF I go here at least twice (3 times on my most recent trip). Had dinner here for the first time and it was equally as good as the breakfasts.

This place is a must visit for me, every time I am in the city. The cioppino is one of the best I have ever had- will order there every time. It an old- school restaurant with a vintage 1930s feel, and I love it! The service is attentive, food is amazing - always a great experience there. They will... More

My husband remembered going here for breakfast over 30 years ago as a child and was excited that it was still in business. He even remembered that it has tiny little Swedish pancakes. We had to try it out for breakfast. The pancakes were fresh and good but nothing worth writing home about. It was very pricey too for breakfast.... More

Located only a few blocks from our Union Square hotel, Sears was a great spot for breakfast. I recommend the french toast - or the world famous swedish pancakes. Fantastic service too!

Food was fine, service a little slow. Nice atmosphere but then they have screens on the walls showing you what the dishes look like. Unless you have never been out before that seems a little unnecessary. Not sure I would return.

It was not awful I just think this restaurant is a waste of time and money. They clearly don't know how to prepare eggs... The pancakes had nothing deserving their reputation and the hashbrowns were just a failure. The service was neither good or bad. The restaurant does not have a lot of window and is thus quite dark. However,... More
