Great food and service. My husband and I go to SF several times a year. We were in wine country all day, so decided last minute to try this place that a friend recommended. The second floor has a 6' ceiling and they packed us in the tiny space on Saturday night. It was a unique experience. We had mussels... More

Really tasty, albeit my dish was a bit small. Feels like some real authentic home-made cuisine, but the best part was the atmosphere and the friendliness of Marco. There's something magical about this place. Recommended.

Had been reading great reviews of this place near my FiDi home......Sooo glad we went to check it out. Wonderful menu items, but there were at least 8 specials, and we each had one of those. Excellent....and who knew you could still dine in SF at below $25 for an entree? A funny thing was upon leaving we ran into... More

Not sure how this restaurant received these high ratings. Limited menu and what is the deal with second floor dining room? Felt like being in a doll house. Menu and dining rooms appear not to have been updated for years.

My partner and I found ourselves in North Beach on the third day of our vacation and looking for authentic Italian - we found it at the Caffe Macaroni, a tiny place on Columbia that is worth the trip and trouble. The server and owner were friendly and inviting right from the get go, even though we'd already eaten a... More

We walked into this restaurant on a Saturday night at 7:30 pm and we thought we were back in Italy. The first dish was amazing - calamari, cannelloni beans, arugla and tomatoes! Our pasta was homemade and wine was great! The waiter and owner were so personable and we enjoyed every minute of our meal! We can't wait to go... More

This is the closest you get to eating in Italy without the airfare and jet lag. The place is tiny. They show you to a small table of your choice, upstairs or down. The guy next to you is visiting from the old country. The owner tells you about the specials and gives you the menu and wine list; it... More

In SFO for a conference and was staying close by, it was so good I wil make it a point everytime I'm here regardless of where I stay in the city. Great atmosphere, great service, and exceptional food.

We were only in San Francisco for 24 hours, but had gotten a recommendation from a local bartender to go here for dinner. We loved this place! We have traveled to Italy many times and this was as authentic as it gets! It is a very small restaurant with that family owned feel to it. The owner spent time talking... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
