I wanted to visit Vesuvio because of it's association with Kerouac and cassady and the rest of the Beats. I'm glad I made it. Vesuvio is a great bar full of interesting people. They have a great selection of excellent craft beers and the walls are filled with great posters and pictures. This was a life experience for me, one... More

If you can believe the legend, all the drug abusing poets of their time have been there: Kerouac, Hemingway and I forgot who else. It's a fun place to have a drink and watch people. Other than many places in the US, it has a history and you can feel it.

Three things you need to remember, to save the staff the repetitious time and effort. 1. There is no food served here, children cannot come in. Daft law, but a law nonetheless. Don't expect to bring your kids with you. 2. Don't pay for two beers with a credit card. Have some consideration. Equally, this is America. Tipping is obligatory.... More

We came in for a drink and were not disappointed. Great little place, very colorful and friendly. Drink was very good too. Lots of history in the place! :-) A must see while in San Francisco.

We went on a tour and got in Vesuvio for his history, bought a pint of a local beer and got kicked out after i tried to take a photo with a tripod. The waitress on the top floor treated me quite rude saying that she didn't want me to take pictures of people's faces when i told her i... More

Vesuvio is a slice of literary history in a bar - and rather grungier than the similar Paris establishments. This was where Jack Kerouac and other poets of the 'Beat' era hung out and the decor and atmosphere looks eerily unchanged. If you don't mind low ceilings, head to the balcony upstairs (if you can get a seat), sit back... More

We tend to judge our holiday by great bars and pubs.....sounds sad but isn't ....and this one was my favourite. Friendly amusing staff, accommodating, good drink selection and the history of the beat poets....to top that it's comfortable, clean and interesting. We could have stayed all day but there is too much to miss here by staying too long in... More

Just go in. Soak up the atmosphere. Drink a pint. Look at the history on the walls and maybe write a poem.

I went to Vesuvio's after two other pubs. The first was so loud that I couldn't breathe, and the second was so dull that I wanted to curl up and go to sleep. We arrived at Vesuvio's, and it was juuuuust right. The atmosphere was laid back but upbeat and positive at the same time. I loved it. We met... More

While we were rambling in North Beach looking for City Lights Bookstore, we came across this weird-looking bar, surrounded by colorful graffiti and odd fellows passionately singing and dancing. This mass of colors tickled my fancy and we decided to enter and have a drink. Despite the bar was very crowded, there was a very small table left in the... More
