We thought we were back in Florence!

What a gem in the heart of Northbeach/"Little Italy"! Can't say enough about the food, ambiance and wait staff/management. The kitchen had a problem with one of our entrees (another server picked ours up and sent it to the wrong table...), so we waited so long for our main course that we just... read more

We had dinner here based on recommendation from Hotel Rex and we were very pleased. The food was delicious and service attentive. The burrata is so creamy and fresh. The snapper special was wonderful and lasagna also very tasty. Highly recommend when in north beach!

From the outside looking in, Ideale looks a bit plain and stodgy, but it was just the opposite. We had a reservation on a Saturday night and were seated quickly with waiters greeting us warmly. We tried the fish specials (the swordfish and trout) and were amazed at the combinations of flavors and spices. The portion sizes were good and... More

As a frequent traveler to Italy, stopping for dinner at Ideale took me back to Rome. Good food, attentive Italian style service (no changes or variations!) and pleasant surroundings. A little noisy if you have "old ears" like I do, so if that is an issue, go early or late. They use GOOD olive oil for dipping your bread.

Great old school Italian food. Service was good, good wine options and the location is very central and convenient from China Town.

A few of us had a lovely dinner. Starters, fish, pasta, all excellent. The staff was charming and attentive. It gets loud as the place fills up, yet we could still hear across the table. Things went sideways when we went to the bathroom. It reminded us of one you'd find in a gas station where they really don't care.... More

My wife and I really enjoyed our meal here. Pasta was all home made. Sauce was perfect. Pescastore had just the right balance of seafood, pasta, and sauce. Service was excellent with an attentive but friendly and unpretentious waiter. Atmosphere was good -- active conversations, but not loud. I highly recommend.

This traditional restaurant offers excellent classic Roman cuisine (not trendy, "foodie" San Francisco) , friendly and efficient service, a bustling ambience, and reasonable prices. It is my top recommendation for a sampling of what San Francisco's Italian North Beach neighborhood has to offer.

"Miserabile," (that's Italian) the waiter said as he passed behind me (audibly, pretentiously, in a foreign language that he was sure I couldn't understand) after he ran his dinner bluff and got called on it. And what was the bluff?: whatever you can get away with. In this case it was $28 bucks worth of saltimbocca (which wasn't saltimbocca) -... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
