My son couldn't wait to take me to this place in his Russian Hill neighborhood during my latest visit. I wasn't disappointed. A small room welcomes us with terrific ambiance and the wonderful smells of Spanish cooking. Since we didn't make reservations, we experienced a short wait and were rewarded with a great corner table. We started with roasted peppers... More

We accidentally stumbled across this restaurants & will return as the tapas were Grade A and the house sangria and tempranillo were reminiscent of the "madre patria"! The staff was friendly, professional, & the chef/owner will guide you to a Spanish deli so that you can muster up your own tapas at home. Lovely restaurant & walking distance to the... More

A group of us went to Zarzuela to celebrate the 60th birthday of one of the friends. I've been there a few times in the past and love the food. This time was as good, if not better, than the previous visits. At least the food was. The exceptional dishes are the quail (the sauce is out of this world),... More

This small restaurant serves authentic Spanish food in a casual, enjoyable atmosphere in the charming Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. The staff is unbelievably skilled and hospitable. With a chef from Madrid and a menu that offers the best of traditional Spanish cuisine, you simply cannot go wrong. Reservations are not accepted so go early, kick back, enjoy a... More

My husband and I went to this popular Spanish restaurant dispute our son telling us it was terrible. Every evening there is a crowd inside so I thought I would give it a try. Well, my son was right. It took too long after we were seated to get an acknowledgment from the waiter. Once we ordered we had to... More

It's about a 15 minute walk from fishermen's wharf and right off the cable car line (bus route 19, with 5 min walk uphill on unions). There are lots of small local restaurants in this area. This one is very good and we enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. Take the time and do like the locals, you will enjoy... More

Never knew how much we enjoyed Spanish food!! The service here was impeccable and the wait staff seemed happy to be doing their job, even though it was Christmas Day! The explanation of each tapa and meal was thorough. The portions were perfect! We were given plenty of time to enjoy each course even though there were some waiting for... More

I lived half a block from Zarzuela for 12 years, and have loved eating there. I never get bored of the selection of tapas. So many favorites.... the dates wrapped in bacon are delectable, the anchovies are subtle and juicy wonderfulness, the Spanish pie of the day is always yummy. I also like how the staff have stayed with the... More

I always prefer my own home made cuisine but when I go out, my priority is to get fresh food instead of frozen stuff. My Italian/French palate can tell when it's home made style with love and maybe someone singing to let it cook the right way. This place got my attention :O) Anton

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
