Expensive and Worth Every Penny

La Folie and its chef have been an SF institution for decades. It is my favorite "special occasion" restaurant. I dined there often back in the day when I had an expense account and before the IRS spoiled the fun with dollar limits on business entertaining. The chef/owner is a classically trained... read more

Extremely disappointed that Fleur de Lyse restaurant had closed – it had real class. So booked La Folie for a special birthday dinner for my wife but the whole experience fell well short of expectations for a restaurant with pretensions of being one of San Francisco’s best. While over-priced the food was good as was the waiter, the hostess was... More

My now fiance and I came here the night we got engaged. It was a perfect meal to end a perfect day. The staff were friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. I was wowed by each course, they even gave us a complimentary celebratory glass of champagne ! Highly recommended.

La Folie serves very good if not innovative food. At a recent dinner for 3 we had a tempura duck egg, whch was tasty and went well with the morel mushrooms and peas, the snalis in lemon butter was quite good as well, definitely different from the ordinary escargot in garlic butter. The duck breast was tender and perfectly cooked... More

Would think you were in a sleek Manhattan restaurant. Great professional service to compliment the ambience. Loved the buttered poached Lobster. My husband enjoyed the Beef tenderloin.

Superior service from waiter, sommelier, and staff. Probably the finest and largest Hudson Valley foie gras--worth the price. Excellent lamb, venison, and duck. Lobster risotto disappointing and desserts underwhelming. $50 corkage fee is excessive.

I have been wanting to eat here since watching Anthony Bourdain review it and I was not disappointed, the food was phenomenal. The wine list was also very complimentary. The fois gras and lobster ravioli were absolute standouts only topped off by chef Roland visiting our table. One small downside was the service. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived... More

First meal was superb, and the second time did not disappoint either. Excellent service. Tried new things this time and once again, all dishes excellent: foie gras, steak, venison special, lobster risotto, goat cheese tatin, quail roti. Cannot say anything bad about them. Desserts, though still quite good were outshone by the entrees. It's expensive, and worth every penny if... More

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
