I'm from Spain and not easy to find in the Bay Area a Spanish restaurant with that level of authentic Spanish cuisine. I found Esperpento by accident and have a great surprise. In Esperpento the paellas are delicious and there is a variety of very well served tapas. The 30 min wait for the paella to be cooked, is worth.

I found Esperpento on trip advisor as we were going to visit San Francisco for a few days and I wanted to plan one special dinner. The reviews for Esperpento caught my eye, most especially since it seemed to be an out of the way, highly popular place for tapas. We invited some family members to join us so we... More

This eclectic and modern tapas restaurant offers a nice honest food and has a very good sangria (to San Francisco). The atmosphere is a bit noisy and young with an appropriate decoration. Is located in the Castro neighborhood. which is being renewed every day

Our first time here, but we've of this place for quite some time. They have a nice list of choices for tapas and paellas. With Paellas, you need an hour's wait. Monday though is Paella day. We had sopa de mariscos, battered snapper and ropa vieja (beef, chicken and chorizo stew). All quite delicious. The tortilla de patata was very... More

If your olive oil and garlic levels are low, this is the restaurant for you. I ordered the vegetarian plate, hoping to avoid anything deep fried, but my veggies came with a lovely, breaded, deep-fried cauliflower sitting on top. Oh, well... the veggies were all delicious, but on the oily side. My companion had the fish of the day, and,... More

We came here with locals that live in "La Mission". The place was pretty full but we got a table straight away. The house red was very nice at $4.50 a glass - a bargain in San Francisco. The four of us dined on the Seafood paella and it was superb. We hope to go bac before we leave to... More

We we staying in the Mission district, and came across Esperpento quite by accident. We couldn't have been more delighted! Although there is a good sized entree menu, the three of us feasted on about 12 selections from the Tapas menu (plus some wine, naturally). OK, the calamari was a bit over done, but absolutely everything else was superb. Prices... More

Went here for tapas before leaving, after a local recommended it. Truly the best Spanish food I've had outside of Spain. The sangria y the Jason Serrano is a must!

We had tapas, sangria, corona, paella, and two dinner combo plates. I had garlic chicken with potatoes and zucchini. It was delicious, even better than some food I've had in Spain! But the waiter was so unresponsive to us, gave one-word answers, when we said someone received the wrong meal he shrugged, and just had a complete poker face the... More

Staying in Mission District

Neighborhood Profile
Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
