I went back to Esperpento after several years and I was greatly surprised of the good quality of the food. We had tortilla de papas which was perfectly done and yummy, in some place they make it too dry. We also had albondigas and pollo adobo. The portions are good for two people to share. The prices are very good.... More

We went there to have dinner around 9 pm and the place was full. We waited about 30 minutes in the bar across the street (it was the recommendation of the staff!), and they called us. The service is not that good, we wanted to have a paella and the waitress said that they were not preparing it anymore because... More

Esperpento Restaurant Last night we celebrated my husband's 60th birthday at Esperpento, a Spanish tapas and paella restaurant in the Mission District in San Francisco. We were a party of 11. At first I was a little apprehensive because my only basis for choosing Esperpento were the good paella reviews on Yelp. I had called in the reservation at 8:00... More

Came here on a local recommendation with my wife on honeymoon. They were busy but this seemed to be an excuse to provide the worst service I experienced in the USA in 2 weeks. Older grey haired 'server' walked off since we didn't immediately know what we wanted and came back 25 minutes later. He was rude and impatient when... More

As a San Franciscan, I go to Esperpento often---particularly for seafood tapas. Somewhat hidden in a bustling part of the Mission District, the inexpensive prices for great food is hard to beat. There are a host of foods that I order over and over again---fried anchovies, snapper, trout, clams, spanish rice (a classic side dish).... Specials come with entree, two... More

Do not waste your time to come to this place. I was looking forward to have an authentic paella, and instead I got a rice dish with black hair and shrimp that were not deveined. When I informed the waitress she said that they do not devein the shrimp and "oops sorry about the hair" Very disappointed experience.

We went for lunch on a Thursday and arrived at 11:35 (early) We were seated right away with menus and water. It took a bit for our order to be taken even though our menus were put down. We ordered paella for two. The waiter told us that paella takes 25 minutes. We were okay with that. ONE HOUR later... More

Six of us shared many different plates at Esperpento. Without exception, they were delicious: jamon iberico, white bean salad, garlic chicken, eggplant (escalivada), mushrooms, patatas bravas, etc. We liked the grilled artichokes so much, we had a second. We ordered the tapas in several rounds to test our appetites vis a vis the size of the orders and to fill... More

It is a 19.00 cab ride from fisherman's wharf. The place was terribly loud and you cannot hear anything said . Mortilla was not authentic . If was just okay. I had it in Spain and it was not like what I ate there. It has rice in and this is not authentic spainish. Pinchot was big and difficult to... More

There is a plethora of restaurants in the Mission from which to choose. We were looking for one near the Marsh. Esperpento serves a variety of paellas, a minor inconvenience being that the minimum serving size is for two. However, the one we chose, shellfish & meat, was certainly plentiful with very good flavor. One must have sufficient time for... More
