One of the very few restaurant with a unique vibe in SF

I live in SF and imho there are not a lot of restaurants with an original and unique vibe. This is Foreign Cinema's strength. The service is also very nice. The food is good but you have other valid alternatives there in the city.

This was a lovely discovery. Looks nothing at the front but the restaurant at the back is lovely. Part inside and part outside, and they show old films on a white wall. Friendly staff, varied menu - definitely worth a visit.

If you like oysters and good wine, this is the place to go. Their oysters are super fresh, the menu organized by origin, you can be as fussy as you want, it will not disappoint you. The wine list is decent, though a bit on the more expensive side, and the ambiance is very cozy.

Fellini, Scola, Bertolucci, Allen, Scorsese, Bergman, Renoir, Buñuel... Just a couple of directors that own the scenery of this place. There are few places in the world that usher you to other dimensions and The Foreign Cinema is one of them. Immersed in Mission District you see an old Cinema, apparently forgotten. Once you open the door the tunnel drives... More

we arrived 15 minutes earlier and the hostess seated us at the bar. we waited at least another 15 minutes until the hostess informed us about the empty table outside (we already made reservations!) and then decided to ask the hostess if she can seat us inside rather than outside. that took another 15 minutes and when we were finally... Was recommended to try this place by a colleague and was really happy that i decided to - since then i've been back 3 times. The setting is pretty unique , especially if you are seated out on the patio and can make the most of the films being shown. The menu is good but i'm unsure how often it... More

Friends had raved about FC but I didn't see the attraction. The food was modest at best but maybe they were having a bad day. The pork chops were dry and the steak had gristle. The service was attentive and knowledgable but it couldn't make up for the food on this night.

I'm surprised that this restaurant often makes top 10 lists. The space is dated, the food is just average, and the service is nothing special. There are so many other better options for this price. My recommendation...skip it.

Horrible service. They are not accommodating at all. We had booked a reservation for a special event and had an unexpected guest show up. The wait staff told us we would have to wait 2 hours to be seated. The table was in an area with ample space and we were very small people. We also suggested sharing a chair... More

Not too far from Dolores Park Foreign Cinema's main strength is in the decor and ambience. Food is very good but not excellent, while the wine we drank (a Napa Pinot Noir) was very good. Reccomended.

Staying in Mission District

Neighborhood Profile
Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
