Cozy booths, busy atmosphere, good food in a great location.

The atmosphere is bustling, but the deep red comfy booths make for a cozy dining experience. The staff was attentive. I had carbonara which was soooo over peppered! Every mouthful contained a huge amount of coarsely chopped peppercorns. Some people may like that, but I think it should be up to the... read more

I have wanted to try Original Joe's for a while. It bills itself as an Italian Steakhouse, but it doesn't really deliver on either. We split a caprese salad and the tomatoes were mush. They were way over ripe, almost inedible. I ordered a steak for dinner, when it arrived I notices the plate was swimming in olive oil. I... More

Every mouthful contained a huge amount of coarsely chopped peppercorns. Some people may like that, but I think it should be up to the customer's discretion. The food was outstanding. The service in the dining room was not as good as the bar area, but all in all, this is a go-to place for me when I visit SFO.

Had a business dinner at Original Joe's in San Francisco and it was a really nice dining experience... It's quite a large restaurant and is lively but the ambiance is really good and the decor is warm and intimate. The menu is Italian influenced and has some more unusual dishes like 'Calf Liver and Onions' and 'Veal Scallopine'. I opted... More

Service still great. We love the little Stockton village location. Safe at night. The menu was very small. I ordered my favorite sweetbreads. Mushy no taste . We waited years for them to reopen...very disappointed. We all ordered our memories. Eggplant parm...no taste, prime rib $34 not a problem but 25% of it was inedible fat. We sent it back... More

This is our second visit to Joe's, not including several visits to their old Westlake restaurant, and we were impressed again with how they combine great service, delicious food, and a very affordable price--super value! Our waitstaff from the waiter to the busboy were polite, friendly, and extremely attentive. Their lasagna, fish & chips, and French Dip sandwiches were exceptional.... More

I know this place is an institution, always but and very well known, but any Italian would say that there is nothing Italian in here. Dishes are American with some Italian style tendency. You could never have pasta as a side dish. Portions are huge and it is impossible to finish the whole plate. I was. It happy with the... More

The ambiente is nice, the food is just ok. We had lunch and it was nothing special as the ravioli and belt sandwich are concerned. Next table had the french toast brioche with fruit and at least that dish looked very good. Beware of the coffee, it was very mediocre.

Based on recommendation from a Sausalito business owner, we went to Original Joe's on a Saturday evening planned last minute. We decided to sit at the counter in front of the kitchen to watch the cooks since we were starving. Our night was filled with excellent attention and jokes by Sergio our waiter, plus we watched the cooks prepare the... More

This is an excellent example of an old school restaurant, the type I grew up dining in. Excellent food and service. I had the flat iron steak that was cooked to perfection. My wife had the calves liver, which was delicious. This meal was paired with a nice bottle of Italian wine. The service was exceptional, any time a staff... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
