Original Joe’s is the quintessential, classic San Francisco dining experience. A fabric of the City for 75 years, it is located in the heart of the historic and majestic North Beach, a mecca for natives, tourists, and culinary aficionados alike. Original Joe’s is the oldest of all existing Joe’s restaurants in the country and is the innovator of what is now nationally known as the “Joe’s Concept”. Family Favorite for Many Years

I have been eating at Original Joe's for as long as I can remember. It's a family tradition. Have lunch or dinner before or after the Giants game. The new location is much better than the old one.

We were a bit disappointed with Original Joe's. The food was pretty average. The red sauce in particular was somewhat bland and uninspiring. We have had much better meals over the years in North Beach. Too bad as this could be a great place with better food as the atmosphere is lively and the service is very good.

Didn't pre-book so could only get a seat at the bar - where you watch the chefs cook. Turned out to be great, enjoyed watching them and the food we had was lovely too. Felt slightly rushed but it was a really busy place. Portions very large - maybe share dishes. Would certainly recommend this restaurant

I had a buisiness dinner for 8 here. The service staff were very quick and polite and the pastas looked great. I had the 1/2 chicken which came with a leg, thigh and wing, but no breast.. What?? Not 1/2 a chicken then!! It was nearly unedible. It was so smothered in oil and lemon I couldn't taste the chicken.... More

I visited this restaurant with family recently. The food was very good. I had the filet, my husband and kids had pasta. We were all happy with our food. The restaurant had a fun atmosphere, big red booths and an old Italian restaurant feel. The prices are kind of high, it was about $150 for the four of us. I... More

I was hoping that the "Joe" from ORIGINAL JOE'S might have been Joe DiMaggio as we were right across the park from the church where he and Marilyn Monroe got married in 1954. Not so! This place is a re-location from the TENDERLOIN District after a fire and I am so glad we had a chance to eat and drink... More

A very kind local recommended this restaurant to me when he saw he searching for a place to eat. He told me it was excellent Northern Italian style food. Since he was a local, I agreed to check it out. The host suggested I eat in the lounge, since I was traveling alone. I had no idea what the lounge... More

We haven't been back to OJ's since it relocated to North Beach after their fire in the Tenderloin. The food is really good here and the restaurant looks so much nicer. They have TVs in the front dining area and the bar. Lots of spacious booths with salvaged wall decorations from their old restaurant. Their fried calamari, $16 was still... More

Had a very nice meal here. I had spaghetti and meatballs and my wife had home baked lasagne. Both were very tasty and were good portions. The service was excellent and there was a great atmosphere. Good history to the place too. Recommended.

It had been 20 years since we had been to the "old" Original Joe's and we were excited to try the new spot. We dined with a group of 8 on a Tuesday evening, the place was busy but not packed. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and dinners. I had the veal piccata-delicious , and James loved his steak. Service was... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
