A neighborhood gem

Very convenient to Z Space on Fl. St. Outdoor seating, very nice service and very well priced. A very simple menu, my partner had the duck and loved it, I had pasta with spinich which was delicious. Nice wine menu by the glass. Absolutely would go back.

I was there for a late Saturday brunch (we arrived at about 2.30 pm). Be sure to come in latest at that time, because by 3.30 pm they were already bringing us the bill without us having asked for it. It has some 6 tables outside, which we didn't get because we were a party of 5 and the tables... More

Plow had a line around the block so we jumped into the car and went to Universal. The bill for three of us for Sunday brunch with tip was $100 which strikes me as a lot, but I wasn't paying. My French toast was superb and I had a side of sausage which had nice seasoning. I just tried to... More

The place is nice and the food is very good. In particular I appreciate french toast with lemon chantilly cream and raspberry. During the morning is not difficult to find a table, it is worst from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Have eaten here a couple of times and really enjoyed the food. But sadly I'm forced to write them a poor review for something else. Turned up there a few Saturdays ago at 2.55pm for some lunch. The girl greeting us said sorry kitchen closes at 3pm, we can't serve you. Yet there were a few tables that had clearly... More

We were checking out studio space in the area and stopped in on a whim. Nice wine selection at reasonable prices. We opted for a favorite from Willamette Valley. The menu changes daily but everything we chose was tasty from the steamed mussels and fresh greens salad to the hanger steak and yellowtail entrees. We rarely opt for dessert, but... More

Not that I cook for the Universal, but it where I can go for a nice roasted chicken when I am too tired to cook. For lunch on the weekday (from Wednesday - Friday) I can pretend to have brunch. On a Sunday, I can get a scone to go and sip a latte on Bernal. Everyone from the owners... More

I am a huge fan of Universal Cafe. I've been for many family brunches and dinners, and I don't think there's a better spot in the city for truly local, fresh food. It's become pretty popular, so be prepared to wait for weekend brunch, and make reservations for dinner. You won't be disappointed. The brunch menu includes special juice or... More

We had a great experience from the wine, the food and the service. This is a small restaurant so I would recommend reservations. We sampled a number of their dinner and appetizer choices. All were awesome. Same with the service. Young energetic crowd. Great place to hang with friends.

Staying in Mission District

Neighborhood Profile
Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
