Description: Fringale pioneered the South of Market culinary renaissance as one of the...
Fringale pioneered the South of Market culinary renaissance as one of the first true French bistros in San Francisco. Featuring French/ Basque cuisine, specialties include spicy Monterey calamari with jalapenos & chorizo, foie gras terrine with nectarine compote, bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, and braised savoy cabbage with caramelized onion sauce. Also popular is traditional duck confit served with lentils "Du Puy" in red wine sauce. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blonde wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing meal prepared by one of the finest French kitchens in San Francisco. In addition to a full bar, Fringale's wine list offers a fine selection of California wines along with wine selections from smaller French producers.

A little France right here in SF

Nice romantic date night spot. It has been there for decades. I love their crab appetizer when it's in season. Service is always warm and impeccable.

After reading reviews we settled on Fringale for San Francisco restaurant week. We were not disappointed. We received excellent service and had an outstanding meal. We will definitely return.

Let's start with the best part of the experience: the staff is really friendly, and extremely professional. The atmosphere is very cozy and relaxing. The food... I would say, overall, slightly above the average. The quality is certainly not proportional to the high prices of the dishes on the menu. Excellent wine list, and good desserts. Among the starters, special... More

While I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere, service, and wine, I wish we could have impressed you more with our food. We always want our guests to leave completely satisfied with their experience, and I'm sorry to hear we weren't able to do that this time. I know we're better than this, and would love the chance to show you... More

Went here for a meeting over dinner. Food was good! Had the roasted beet special and the beef carpaccio. Reasonably priced and fresh. However, the waiter was extremely intrusive, constantly leaning over the table to clear dishes that weren't empty and glasses we were still drinking from - often interrupting the conversation. To the point where it was frankly difficult... More

When you sit down at our table, we want both your food and service to be excellent, Eliza. I'm sorry to hear that wasn't the case on the day you were in. I know we're better than this, and I'd love the chance to show you that in the future. All the best, Jean-Marie Legendre, Owner More

This is a French bistro type restaurant with a great menu. But what makes it stand out from other restaurants is the friendly, jovial staff. Our waiter was very professional but very friendly and witty! When we said one of our party had a train to catch he made sure the dessert came speedily. Highly recommend.

Authentic french restaurant. Amazing pommes frites! Everything was perfectly done. They even catered to our time constraints. We arrived late because of the traffic and needed to be out early for our cirque du soleil tickets. Great job!

I love this place, first dined here in the early 90's, just excellent. The room is quite beautiful, the service professional, warm and very friendly. On my last visit I had the Rack of Lamb, so good. The sponge cake bread pudding with bananas and chocolate, delicious. There's a good reason why this restaurant has been in business so long,... More

I've been to this place a few times and normally recommend it. It's very small and the night we went it was packed. Normally the service is excellent but our table was ignored for 15 mintues after being seated. We had to ask another waiter to send our waiter over which was amazing since we were seated directly in the... More

I appreciate your recommendation! Sorry to hear your service was a little slower than usual, but I'm glad you enjoyed your calamari. We always aim for our service to be attentive and efficient, and it sounds like we might have been having a little bit of an off night on your last visit. Look forward to seeing you again soon.... This was a very nice find. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with the menu. The atmosphere was warm and relaxing. We had the Petrale Sole and it was done to perfection. The salad choices were terrific. We look forward to a return dinner.

Great French influenced basque restaurant. Every course was delicious, but the lamb chops are some of the most flavorful and properly cooked that I have ever had. Service is very efficient, but sort of with a bit of French attitude (not the most cheerful, but not by any means bad). Would definitely return.

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
