A must go!

Have eaten here several times... This trip, we were 18 in the wine cellar and it was once again, amazing! Fabulous appetizers with house-made mozzarella along with house-made prosciutto, grilled mini lobster tails and 3 wonderful pastas. Day 1 of trip family trip (visiting from Midwest). Thankful Hilton Union Square concierge desk recommend this place to us. Fantastic meal with service as good as it gets. Go with any dish that is recommended by the waiter. We did and so glad we did.

As you arrive, you are greeted by a welcoming doorman followed by a Maitre'D and wait staff escorting you to your reserved table. This is a wonderful Italian restaurant that prides itself on excellent food and service.

The restaurant has an extensive menu and wine list, however both are on the high end of cost. Pasta dishes are $22 - $25 each and the meat dishes are $30 - $40. Salads are additional, Deserts are about $10-$12 each. The wine list is long but there are very few below $40 per bottle. Dinner last night was very... More

Been coming here since 1999-- The food is consistently excellent, especially the Carbonara--It is as good as any in Rome. The service is excellent, the wait staff is amazing-- many have worked at the restaurant for 20+ years--Which means something. It is worth a stop when in San Fran. We always make a point of coming at least once-- One... More

You walk in and it feels like the place your parents went--40 + years ago. Come to think of it, they probably DID come here. Anyhow...Waiters in tuxedos, cool and sort of dark in the downstairs 'wine cellar' room, slightly cheesy decor. On the other hand, maybe it's nice to see something that's not a clone of the cool modern... More

This restaurant is old school and it definitely attracts a lot of italians and folks who know the waiters, managers, owner, etc. It did not seem to attract yuppy types locals, but there were those of tourist types. Our waiter was very nice, attentive, and talkative, although I often had trouble with his accent, which ironically I thought added to... More

Been coming here for about 30 yrs, the food is consistently good, waitstaff always attentive. We plan our trips to include at least one (sometimes two!) dinners at NBR. Ask the staff what's fresh and follow their advice- you won't go wrong. Lamb alla Bruno, Saltimbocca, chicken cannelloni, bolognese are favorite entrees; house-cured prosciutto and melon, and mozzarella w/ tomatoes... More

Wow, I attended a 50th birthday party at this restaurant, as we walked in, I didn't see anywhere they could possibly seat our group of 12, we followed the Host through the restaurant, where the wall opened up into a stairway. We were lead downstairs to a private dining room. It was beautiful and the wait staff were impeccable. So... More

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
