Very good Italian food with superb service

We visited the winery of the owner of this restaurant in 2012 and heard about this place then. Restaurant has an excellent ambiance, with very good Italian food. The service was excellent - not rushed although the restaurant was full. If you go - order a bottle of the owner's wine (Petroni... read more

My father and I frequented this Gem many times over the last 40 years. The owner is an incredible restaurateur . Although it's been 5 years since our last visit I can't imagine Mr. Lorenzo Petroni not serving the freshest fish, cheese and veal in all of San Francisco. I can't recommend just one thing because thee entire bill of... More

Consistently the best Italian in town! For top-flight service ask for Daniel or Mel, just follow their recommendations- you will not go wrong! The lamb was especially delicious last nite, a difficult choice over the fresh swordfish and sole that looked and smelled heavenly! House-cured prosciutto and melon is a must; the tomatoes w/ mozzarella, house salad, and pasta de... More

Having travelled through CA for 20 days and with few exceptions eaten great food and had superb service, this restaurant was the low point of the trip. We found it on tripadvisor and the welcoming as we entered was positive. After that however it all went downhill. Poor service, staff with limited knowledge, over cooked food. As an example, as... I frequent this restaurant every time I visit San Fran. The food is always fantastic and the service is top notch. This is truly authentic Italian. If you want something that is not on the menu, or want to change one of the dishes to your liking, it is never a problem at North Beach. The gnocchi is one of... More

It is always a delight to walk away thinking I arrived in a city that I have not visited for years, wanted some traditional Italian food just like the Mamma's make it and guess what, you find it thanks to the concierge at the St Regis and Trip Advisor. Great prosciutto and melon which was as good as it gets... More

We’ve been coming here for years, whenever we have a craving for escargot and Zabiaone, there is no better than North Beach Restaurant. North Beach is our pre-opera meal when in the city, or just craving escargot… I clearly remember the first time my husband took me here over 20 years ago, I had the macadamia nut crusted scallops, they... We stumbled upon this restaurant in Little Italy on our first night in San Fran and we were pleasantly surprised. The waiter was excellent with his recommendations and wine choice. The food was fabulous from the mozzarella and tomato to the arriabata. The restaurant feels a little like walking on to the set of the Sopranos but that's no bad... More

Had a wonderful meal on a July Sunday night. The host was a charming older man. Service by wait staff was excellent. We managed to run up a $42 line item on a custom appetizer with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and carpaccio but it was actually worth it. House wine was great. I had a fantastic gnocchi Gorgonzola. Oh my goodness.... More

We booked a table in North Beach due to all the good TripAdvisor reviews and came out baffled, this place was really not good at all. We were in San Fran for almost two weeks, ate out almost every night and this meal stood out as the worst, especially considering the price. The clam linguine I had was bland with... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
