Rose Pistola opened in 1996 to critical acclaim, including the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America. Named for Rose 'Pistola' Evangelista, a neighborhood barkeep, cook and all around character, the restaurant has evolved in to a North Beach institution. Our food has always been inspired by the Northern Coast of Italy and sourced from local fishermen, farmers and ranchers. Rose Pistola offers free live music four nights a week. Our musicians are the best in the area and love playing for a crowd in the bar. We offer an excellent wine list that is focused on small producers from throughout Italy and California. The bar boasts a substantial collection of Grappas, Italian Liqueurs and Aperitifs, and offers original cocktails that change seasonally. Join us for local and innovative Italian food from new executive chef Steve Walker and enjoy a festive time in bustling North Beach

Nice Italian, good service.

I particularly liked the Caprese salad starter, I think the menu generally is a little limited. The chefs theatre is good if you are in your own.

The food was excellent. Best pesto gnocchi I've ever had. It was light as air. Very nice atmosphere and great wine. Would highly recommend.

My husband and I stopped by here during the daytime in September and sat outside. We hadn't done any research but we're getting hungry so thought we'd give it a go, whilst the view wasn't great, the food more than made up for that. I had the most delicious pizza I think I have ever had and my husband, who... More

Twenty years since our last visit when Rose was an exceptional place. Hard to return and expect the same experience. Excellent environment and fine service. Great beginning. We certainly enjoyed the Burrata salad with grilled ciabatta and roasted radicchio. Excellent combination. Stuffed Calamari with prosciutto and lentils was creative and tasty. Unfortunately our flatbread with pears and pancetta was bland... More

those mussels are so damn good, recommended by my colleague who've been here a year ago. They feel fleshy and raw but it is definitely cooked as they have sprung open. the stuffed squid is quite nice as an appetizer. otherwise standard italian food is ok like pasta and pizza.

During our trip to US and short stay by in Frisco we had a chance to have a dinner in that amazing place. At a very reasonable price we had our dinner with some red wine. We booked a table during the city walk and on arrival found that it was too close to the live band. We wanted to... More

Serendipity brought me to Rose Pistola after 2 hours stuck in traffic coming back from a full day in Napa. I was traveling with a friend who wanted to go to Sotto Mare but we couldn't get parking nearby, my sciatica was killing me from all the stop & go driving, I was starving and it was starting to rain.... Our second time visiting SF and our second time eating at Rose Pistola. The food is good, but the wine selection is better. The service has always been great. Make sure you get a slice of Sacripantina and a cappuccino for dessert.

Inspired by northern Italy cuisine. The wine list is expansive but the food menu is quite limited, unless you really fancy what they have to offer. Because of this, I opted for a mushroom pizza. My friend had the spaghetti. The servers try to upgrade you. So long as you keep ordering, they are happy. I think this place to... More

Nice food, pleasant server, good music, but they rush you to eat and get out so that the can seat the next set of guests.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
