It doesn’t get more local than Calzone's, in the heart of North Beach. Whether you're sitting outside at the heated cafe tables or inside in one of the comfy booths, this sparkling bistro with a decidedly Cal-Euro atmosphere is the perfect place for watching eclectic locals mix with visitors drawn by North Beach's reputation as the hip place to see and be seen. The restaurant has been owned and operated by the same North Beach native since 1986 and is open 365 days a year, serving food continuously from 11:30 am until 1:00 am.

There's not much more enjoyable than sitting outside in a street side cafe, enjoying a glass of wine, sharing yummy small plates (the beet salad and Italian pot stickers....mmmm) and people-watching the evening away. Staff are friendly and attentive. We enjoyed Calzone's so much we went back again with a friend and had a great Margarita pizza.

We have eaten here several times. We travel to SF on business several times each year and always make a point to eat dinner here at least one night. They have never disappointed me. Food has always been very good and the service is even better. Great place to eat at a reasonable price...for SF.

This place looked very nice from the outside and we chose to sit out to people watch and enjoy some cool air since the day was so hot. The food was disappointing. I ordered the crab pasta and my friend ordered the chicken pasta. Both were not very flavorful and overpriced. I ordered a French lemonade that was very good.... More

It's been 24 years since I've been here and it's just as good as first time. Great service and very good food! We all liked our dishes: husband lasagna, daughter chicken ravioli and I had a pasta with sausage. Not inexpensive - San Fran prices, but you won't be disappointed.

We had dinner on the outside terrace with our two teens (heaters outside kept us warm). We loved the atmosphere and the food was great. Everything we had was delicious: calamari, fresh made pasta entrees, pizza and chocolate mousse. Service was speedy, just the way we like it!

I wish I had seen what the pizzas actually looked like before I ordered, since they are very small for $17. We ordered the Triple Sausage to share. The sausages were delicious, but the pizza should have been 2-3 times bigger for that price. The place was busy on a Sunday night, but we got right in. Lots of families.... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
