It doesn’t get more local than Calzone's, in the heart of North Beach. Whether you're sitting outside at the heated cafe tables or inside in one of the comfy booths, this sparkling bistro with a decidedly Cal-Euro atmosphere is the perfect place for watching eclectic locals mix with visitors drawn by North Beach's reputation as the hip place to see and be seen. The restaurant has been owned and operated by the same North Beach native since 1986 and is open 365 days a year, serving food continuously from 11:30 am until 1:00 am.

great outdoor seating on the sidewalk facing the street. fun location, this is it ITALY. Would consider this a must eat spot in San Fran. Call ahead and get an out door table. The bread is awesome too. Advice: bring a bottle of wine, they charge a $4.95 cork fee.

We walked over the North Beach area and decided to have lunch here. This is a cute little place with fun decor with table on the sidewalk, as well as open window table seating. We were there pretty early so it was just us and another table in the whole restaurant. To start we had some garlic bread, which was... More

My wife and I stop here often when we are wandering around the waterfront and North Beach. Their sausage triple pizza is superb (just right for 2) and goes perfectly with a glass of wine. Service is excellent and there is no better place to sit on a nice day that at their cute tables for 2 along Columbus Ave... More

We ate here for lunch under heaters for side walk dining. The food was excellent, service was good and price was fair. It was a treat to sit under the heaters. I highly recommend this restaurant, it was a short walk up Columbus street from the Wharf. Our meal was good and everything they brought out for other people dinning,... More

We went after we had a walking tour go past earlier in our stay. It looked good and not too expensive. The food was of a good standard and the staff were friendly enough. However, if your looking for a "meal out" rather than just eating, this place lacks a little atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, it is fine and... More

Real Italians serving pasionately presented Italian food. My wife and I sat under the heated tables outside enjoying the passing crowd and the beautiful food like we were back in Cortona.Italians just have the knack for making sure you're having an excellent experience.

The option to dine inside or outside is your first choice. Outside offer great people watching, but given your position on the sidewalk people are really watching you (and looking down into your plate). We opted to eat indoors and enjoyed the same people watching privileges without the reciprocal viewing from bystanders and people strolling by the area. The pre... More

Walked by this place on my way to Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf. I was underwhelmed by both and subsequently doubled back and had a late lunch at Calzone's, The salumi sandwich and garlic fries were both tasty. Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
