After hiking around San Francisco we were hungry. We came upon Umbria Restaurante, about 2 blocks from our hotel and after looking at the menu decided to dine there. A great decision by us! We started off with a Margherita pizza. Great tasting dough and the flavors of the sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil blended perfectly. Because we split the... More

Good service with some Italian waiters. Nice food selection with consistent quality. Excellent spaghetti, gnocci was good but not great(I'm very picky with gnocci). Other dishes seemed well prepared and tasty. Limone dessert sorbet was tasty. Definitely worth trying and worth a repeat visit.

Spur of the moment date night with my wife. While later than usual for dinner, we had a nice meal split between the two of us -- and was still filling.

Some of the worse food I've had in a while. The calamari was rubbery and the tartar sauce was thicker than mayonnaise. I returned the so called Salmon Carpaccio - nothing carpaccio about it; it is basically thickly cut smoked salmon. The spinach salad was drenched in salad dressing. The service was adequate. I think the waiter fakes an Italian... More

We stumbled upon this place after spending the day at the museums. It is a quaint little place, perfect for a late lunch. We split a thin crust pizza with peperoni and jalapeno peppers. It was wonderful. The staff was very attentive and personable.

We sat outside, which was just fine, but the inside was so lovely--cozy and inviting! We had the gnocchi and buccatini, which we loved. Also had a cup of minestrone soup. It was excellent, but I haven't seem minestrone like that. The service was also friendly and competent. Two relative minor things to mention--the bread is good but I prefer... More

The menu is Italian and this is the real deal -- not since a lengthy trip to Italy have we come across a place that could pull this off. The food is amazingly-well thought out and prepared and the restaurant's atmosphere is just wonderful. This is a very relaxing place and well worth a visit. Umbria has a small, comfortable... More

We are batting 1,000 in San Francisco. Got this recommendation from the conceriege at the Palace Hotel. Went to Umbria because it was a nice walk from the hotel. Our waiter Satya was from Rome so a good start. Lovely caprese that they divided between my husband and I without our asking. Peter had the white pizza with prochutto which... More

I attended a recent conference at the Moscone center this past week and we all stayed at the Courtyard on 2nd Street, so the Umbria was an easy choice. The outside would have you believing it is an average restaurant as would the ranking on trip advisor. The experience inside is a total pleasant surprise with real Italian waiters, a... More
