New decor, same great lunch menu

Café Claude, tucked away in an alley of small restaurants near Chinatown has been a favorite for decades. We had not visited in 5+ years and were surprised to find sleek new décor but the service and food were as remembered. Good salads and sandwiches with Alsatian beer. We'll be back.

When I go downtown I love going to lunch at Café Claude. The food is consistently good. A little of the Frenchness is missing but enjoyed it just the same.

Everything promised well for the Cafe Claude: the welcome was warm, the booths snug, the menu enticing; but it never quite delivered. My colleagues both chose roast squash soup which they pronounced good. My lardons salad was good except that the egg on top failed the basic egg-cooking test, having lost its vibrancy during the operation. One of my colleagues... More

San Francisco has a sizable population of French ex-pats which is reflected in a lot of great French restaurants. Cafe Claude has been one of my favorites for a long time. The decor is authentically French bistro as is the menu. The wine list is good, the food is very, very good. I had steak frites on my last visit... More

This cute little restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. As out of towners it was a bit hard to find, as its in an alley with several other restaurants. The place did not disappoint, such a cute little French restaurant with wonderful menu selections. I had the pasta that was in special. The noodles were cooked perfect and... More

I ordered the half chicken (about $25) and glass of Merlot. They were both wonderful. The meal was simply prepared, roasted on a bed of cabbage and tasted fresh and was not overwhelmed with too much sauce or spice. The restaurant is down a quaint alley and even though it is late January, it felt warm enough to sit outside... More

My wife and I enjoyed a delicious meal in a quiet romantic setting at the end of a day of sightseeing. The waiter was friendly. The service was excellent. The food was wonderful. This was our second visit in two years. Both visits were equally fine.

Once again, my husband found the perfect combination of atmosphere and food at this little café on a tine alley, not far from the hustle and bustle of Union Square, But it felt like we were had stepped into a European film set. To start, we entered to hear the strains of a jazz trio at the front of the... More

This has to be the best sauce with mussels that I have ever had, including in France. The fries, which I asked to be well done, or crispy, were perfect. The mussels were small, delicate, and delicious . One person ordered the steak with fries, which was also very good. We shared the citron tarte for dessert and it was... More
