FOOD BETTER THAN EVER, but…

Wife and I have been coming to First Crush periodically over the last ten years or so, usually when attending plays at ACT or the SF Playhouse. It has always been good enough to come back, but never so wonderful to draw us back outside of the usual rotation of our pre-play dinner places. But, our... read more

I know this restaurant for few years. I was very disappointing. The food now is not very good. The dishes are not as explained on the menu. The price are very expensive for what you have. I strongly not recommend this place.

Excellent wine. Food inconsistent. Calamari mushy and greasy. Tartare good. Salmon so small for $30 I thought half fell off plate. Waiter never cleared appetizer plates. Got some orders wrong. Some food we ordered never came out. Way overpriced.

Hi David, I am glad you enjoyed the wine and I am sorry to hear about your inconsistent service experience. The calamari is lightly battered with a flash fry then we put 2 of our sauces over top and saute it. Our salmon is cut by the Chef daily portioned at 6oz and set on top of fresh vegetable selection.... More

I am delighted to hear you enjoyed all the various offerings on our food menu. And, truly appreciate you choosing us for your theater night out. We work very closely with the wineries and distributers in California to get the best price possible when sourcing wine. We use the standard restaurant mark up model. I will have to talk to... More

The restaurant was very nice although small. The wait staff was efficient and not too invasive. Our meals were delicious and didn't take too long to be brought out. I think it was a great restaurant to introduce us to san francisco!

Small quiet restaurant with great wine selections, but menu was very limited, and we all were underwhelmed. It seemed that the food was an after thought to the wine. Which is OK but if you want a dining experience or just good food go somewhere else. The staff was attentive. Restaurant was quiet and small so that was all good.

Hi Janet, You are correct. We specialize in the wine first selecting over 200 boutique wines from throughout California. Then, we select seasonal ingredients with a California style presentation food to pair with the wine. We offer steak, seafood, chicken and pork along with several small plates from salads to pastas. We incorporate the wine in our sauces to serve... More

I was last in SFO in January 2014 and really enjoyed my visit here. The waitstaff was friendly enough, but it was pretty noticeable that larger parties (read, bottles of wine) pulled all staff towards them, and folks going in solo or in a couple will be second banana. I wasn't sure if I wanted to eat, as I only... More

Hi Adrian, Thank you for returning. Every guest should be treated consistently with attentive service. We are used to hosting large groups and events; therefore, your service still should have been top notch. I am sorry to hear we missed our marks with you. We actually have added items to our menu and we do switch out items as we... More

The atmosphere could really use a boost. The atmosphere is pretty lame for being a wine bar, with this name, and these prices. The food was mediocre, nothing special. The wine flights were good. Service was okay. Would only go back here if we were at a loss for where to go. Very pricey. Not charming.

We stayed at the Clift and were recommended First Crush as a great little place serving California cuisine. As this was our last night in California after a long road trip We really were hoping for a special dinner. When we arrived (on time ) for our 7.45 dinner reservation, they informed us our table wasn't quite ready. The guests... More

First Crush is a cute little restaurant in Union Square. It's small, so make a reservation. We shared a cheese flight, dessert flight, truffles and some wine. Everything was delicious. The lavender Creme brûlée was outstanding. A good time was had by all. Great service. Great atmosphere and decor.
