Could Be In New York

I attended a business dinner at Alfred's in San Francisco about a week after a similar dinner at Keen's in New York City. Both are comparable. The both have excellent Single Malt selections, steak is outstanding and the service was 'old school'.

Right next to the Hilton Financial District off Kearny! Old, established and historical. Perfect steak cooked to order medium rare. Wine list is extensive but before wine asked for a certain gin which was not offered. Instead our waiter made a recommendation of Junipero Gin (made in San Francisco). What a great selection! This added to the total experience.

The place was in an alley and when we walked in a strong strange odor his U.S. Both. When we approached the hostess stand the old crabby lady was more interested if we had a reservation that what the foul smell was. My reply was, we may not stay, her reply was ok then give me the name and I... More

Steak...Old School Style. What to Expect at Alfred’s We went in search of an old school boys night out. A visit to Alfred’s went well several years ago. How is it now? Food: Steak...cooked beautifully to order and reasonably priced (for a steak house). And a tasty salad. My colleague report reported the same. Overall expect a quality meal. Ambiance:... More

Good steak (ribeye, 16ounce). Not the best I ever had, but good. I particularly liked the whole interior and the atmosphere that was around. Good traditional bartenders joking and knowing how to deal with all different kind of customers. Like that.

If you like a classic steak house, well cooked steaks and reasonable prices you should try Alfreds. It is definitely in my top two in San Francisco. Tremendous service and perfectly cooked steaks.

My husband and I ate here on our last night in SFO. The service was perfect, great wine list, the wedge salad was delicious, but my steak dinner was just okay. My steak and veggies lacked seasoning, and I like a really well seasoned steak if I'm going to a steakhouse. I did notice their menu said they only lightly... More

Very Very good steak!!! The waiter was very gentle. The Mohitos didn't have a lot of Rum, but we asked for more and got the addition for free.

Nice happy hour. If you buy two drinks, you get a free appetizer. My friend and I really enjoyed the old-school charm of this place and would definitely go back.

We ate here last night & had a great meal. We all had steaks which were cooked to perfection. The portions were not the usual oversized amounts but just right for the meal. Good wine list reasonably priced. Couldn't fault the food or service. Highly recommended.

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
