Old tome SF steakhouse

A visit to Alfred's is like traveling back to the Victorian era with the decor! This is a old time family run restaurant from it's early days on Broadway Street. The service is great and the food is above par. A disappointment is that they have stopped serving Prime Rib because of a lack of... read more

This is an old time steakhouse, which our family who lives in SF had always wanted to go to. We were visiting from Cleveland and we all went on a Tuesday night. There were eight of us and they were all ready for us, which was great. The decor is a step back in time which we were excited about.... More

Places like this are hard to find now a days. This is an old school, old San Francisco Barbary Coast type of place. A place for a man to get a man's steak, but women like it, too. ;) Fork tender beef, excellent sides, top shelf cocktails made right and a waitstaff that is the ultimate in professional. Not there... Alfreds is changing ownership after 88 years. Sad to see this well loved neighborhood gem change. Very few places have long time waiters and hosts that know you by name and who deliver exceptional service. The food is also good, steakhouse style. Decor is out of the 60's, Sinatra 's "Rat Pack" style. Great place for business meetings or a... More

My brothers recently returned from an Hawaiian trip. And, my wife and I also just returned from a Tokyo trip. We decided to have a change of pace in cuisine in San Francisco! There were several restaurants we wanted to try but they were book. We decided on Alfred's Steakhouse, at 659 Merchant Street, near to Chinatown Hilton Hotel. It... More

Alfred's is a classic - almost old-fashioned - steakhouse. Old-fashioned, meant in its most postive sense, as the sevice level is high and the steaks are as good as they should be. The Chicago Bone-In Ribeye was tender and perfectly cooked according to my wishes, and Alfred's Classic Cheesecake was really delicious and mouthwatering as well. According to the noises... More

Found this on Yelp and SO GLAD WE DID. It's been around since the 1940s and still maintains that old school charm. It's not far off Union Square. A windowless restaurant with big red leather booths - and you feel like you've stepped back in time. Tuxedoed waiters that are SO attentive and made you feel special!! The specialize in... More

The food was good. It did not amaze me. The lamb chops were dry as was my colleagues fish. The atmosphere is weird and the location was down a small alley

Alfred's is a steakhouse in the tradition of old San Francisco. Few of these classic restaurants survive, and Alfred's has achieved a wonderfully high level of atmosphere, service, and delectable food. Alfred's is always a must when we are visiting the city.

We visited on a Wed evening and both ordered the special. For $56 you had a choice kf soup or salad, steak, side dish and dessert all the same portions as on the regular menu. The wedge with bacon and blue was perfect, rib eye steak cooked as ordered and great flavor. Creamed spinach was very good. For dessert I... More

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
