Sometimes, the old ways ARE the best ways!

Walk into Alfred's, and take a trip into old San Francisco! A beautiful space, friendly, nattily attired servers and bartenders, a serious bar...and oh, the food! Steaks the way they were meant to be prepared, and sides and salads that are worthy supporting players. Whether you're a nostalgia... read more

The truth about their service charge policy. We visited this restaurant tonight, the food was very good, full of bankers and financial people given its vicinity to the city however this is not the point. This establishment has a policy of forcing what they call "An 18% service charge", which could not be further from the truth, here is the... More

Alfred's reputation for steak and old fashioned dinning does not disappoint. Fabulous atmosphere, great food and all served by friendly nattily attired waiters. It is a classic gem that should not be missed. It is iconic San Francisco don't miss out!

This is the place I love to take visitors to in San Francisco. The whole experience is classic, starting with the alley leading up to the entrance. You almost expect to see Bogart and Bacall at the bar. The Scotch list is longer than many restaurants' wine lists. Quick, order one of those fabulous steaks before some nanny state declares... Alfred's. Iconic San Francisco and best steak in city. When I lived in the City I ate there often. Start with a well priced drink from Winston in the bar and then a superb dry aged steak. Warning: Alfred's is not trendy. An old fashioned steak house with solid, excellent food, unpresuming service, and a decent well-priced California heavy wine... More

Real civilization, good manners, good food, sound level amenable to good conversation. A restaurant for grownups.

If one is looking for the old-fashioned San Francisco experience, this is the place. The ambience, the service and the food continue to be what we like best about dining out in our City. A great cocktail before supper, any of the several steaks and sides and we are happy, happy. We have been dining with this family-run business for... More

I love this place because it is a non-chain old-school steakhouse with impeccable steaks. The Chinatown location is good for business lunches on Thursdays, when they are open for lunch. This is where I come with my steak and martini loving homies for some kvetching and bonding on Thursdays over a good NY strip, burger, pasta or what have you.... More

Stiff drinks. Matured and professional wait staff. Good choice of meat cuts and good portioned sides made the dinner perfect. Good value for your money.

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
