Established in 1951. The family of Mama and Papa Sanchez, serves up traditional and innovative breakfast dishes in "Little Italy", the famous North Beach District in San Francisco. Across the street from the beautiful Washington Square Park, Mama's legions of fans line up early and throughout the day. We use the freshest of local products, imported Italian meats to fill our fluffy omelettes, homemade jam, fresh baked breads, pastries and other delectable dishes. We invite you to try our little restaurant and become part of the Mama's Family.

Pricey but amazingly good breakfast food. Freshly made jam each day on the fluffy-est of pancakes; moist home made coffee cakes in various flavors; warm and friendly wait staff. Doors open at 8am but lines start forming by 7am for limited seating in homey environment.

Mama's opens at 8AM. To beat the line you'll most likely need to arrive around 6:30AM, but even though you may be first in line when they open the doors, you're still waiting over an hour for them to open. So just know that if you make the decision to eat here, you are deciding to wait mostly likely an... More

By far the best breakfast we had in San Francisco. We waited for over an hour inline to get a table but it was worth it. Pro: the food, specially the famous Monte Christo sandwiches, Apple crumble and cappuccinos, the service was friendly and funny. Cons: the waiting time and they accept no credit cards. Make sure you take cash... More

You may have to wait in a long queue (average time in the week is an hour or so and longer on weekends) but trust me their signature dish "Monte Christo sandwich " is well worth the wait....so incredibly Yummy...P.S. They only take Cash and Debit card.....NO credit cards

Long line because there are not so many tables inside but it's common in SanFran. Summarizing, it's a place with nice, oldschool atmosphere and typical American breakfast served till the evening. Eggs benedict were average but other dishes o.k. Good for one day but it wouldn't be my favourite place.

My God, the wait is long. If you don't like standing in line, don't come here. But by God... THE WAIT IS WORTH IT! Once you have spent the time chatting to people in line (a great way to get travel tips by the way. We pretty much planned our day by talking to strangers) you finally get in line... More

I wish I could say that it was worth the two hour wait, but it just wasn't quite there for me. However, the other 5 people in my family disagree. I will say that it is an excellent breakfast spot. For me, if the line goes back further than the back door (equal to about 45 minutes) I would wait... More

If you read the rest of the reviews you will see everyone mentions the wait. We arrived at 8:15 on a Wednesday morning and the line was 25 people deep. We were seated at 9:35. By that time the line was 50 people deep. The place is very small with little seating. They let you in and you place your... More

I thought the wait would be worth it since most reviews say so, but I wasn't impressed. I mean, the food was good, I had the monte cristo sandwich and thought is was tasty but not worth waiting 1.5 hours in line. The portions were also small for the price. I'm glad I tried it since its so hyped up... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
