We were sitting in our hotel and wanted something close and found this restaurant. We walked in and immediately loved the decor and were greeted by numerous staff. The service was great, the food tasted incredible. A glass never went empty, dishes were cleared promptly and we left happy, sure to return again. Our server, Coen treated us so well,... More

Great ambience, prices acceptable, great service. Lots of beers on tap, and choice of food. We felt the wait staff was really attentive and not obtrusive.

It tells you something when it's not crowded and there is no need for a reservation on a Friday night. Both of our entrees tasted terrible, the appetizer came out at the same time as the entree. They were out of stock on the wine that I chose on the wine list. Our waiter barely paid us any attention, but... More

we had dinner here Valentine's night 2014. We made reservations on line several days ahead because we assumed it would be busy. We were correct. We had late (9pm ) reservations due to our late arrival into San Francisco. Seated right away, service was fine, especially since the restaurant was packed. We enjoyed the special cocktail for the holiday. The... More

The Grand Cafe is part of the Hotel Monaco--a Kimpton hotel a couple of blocks off Union Square. You can usually count on Kimpton to have above average restaurants but this restaurant is the exception. It should have been a clue when the place was empty at 7:00 on a Friday night when every other restaurant was packed. But we... More

The Grand Cafe is grand in design and decor but more mediocre in its food offerings. It is like so many restaurants in a hotel, a hotel restaurant. Mass produced food at over the top prices. At least the staff are pleasant and very helpful. Ok for a late night snack after a busy day but there are other options... More

Went in ad hoc for brunch on a weekday. The decor is impressive living up to the name with sculpture aplenty. Even got a painting of toad of toad hall above the kitchen. The service was good if a little slow considering the place was quiet. They had to reduce our bill due to running out of spuds. Nonetheless our... More

Had been there before and was quite impressed. Stopped in for a lat lunch and had lazy service. SHared a sandwich with hubby that was totally forgettable. Menu was abbreviated. perhaps one should try it for dinner- they had a pizza oven which looked great. I was underwhelmed in all regards.

We stayed in the Monaco Hotel and dined in the Grant Cafe after a long day of walking. Waiter wasn't terribly friendly until we ordered a bottle of wine, then he warmed up. We ordered two appetizers - ceviche and steak tartar. I'm a ceviche afficionado and have eaten it in many places. This was perfect, if you like bay... More

We attend the American Conservatory Theater Wednesday matinees, a block away from this restaurant, and usually dine here before the theater (and sometimes afterwards). As a result, I reviewed this restaurant in November 2013 ("Good for Before or After Theater"), so I will try not to repeat myself in this review. I was surprised by some of the recent lackluster...
