Nice lunch atmaospere.

Lunch at the Hillstone was very good. The atmosphere in the restaurant was pleasant and clean, service was good and the lunch fare menu had a good selection to choose from. Location is right across the Embarcadero from Pier 33 (the Alcatraz Island Ferry) and prices reflect this.

We were enjoying drinks at the bar when a manager started arguing with an elderly customer about something and became positively abusive. We left shortly afterwards.

I went to Hillstone on my first night to San Francisco. I have been eating at Houston's since I was a child in the 80's. I can honestly say I have eaten at Houston's hundreds of times in my life. That is not an exaggeration. It is one of my favorite places ever. I do miss the bbq chicken. It... More

Had pre booked from the Alcatraz evening tour, but did not realise the time given on the website was the departure time from the island, so arrived nearly an hour late, but was greeted and seated without fuss. Prompt, discreet service, a reasonable wine list, happy to make recommendations, and explain the "Americanisms" to two ignorant Brits. Poor steak cooked... More

I stopped in as I was exploring the Embarcadero area before the 4th of July fireworks extravaganza. It was a wonderful reprieve from the activity level outside. The wait staff was superb and the special of the nice, Sea Bass, was incredibly delicious.

Wow...I heard about Hillstone from a few friends but I was not expecting this. All the dishes...appetizers, entrees and desserts were amazing. We had the roasted artichokes, the ahi tuna salad (an entree that we shared with a few people as a appetizer), the crab cakes (full of crab meat!), USDA prime fillet, Hawaiian rib eye, salmon, and blackened rib... A bit pricey but that is to be expected since it was formerly Houstons. The service was on point and the food was superb. Great location right on Embarcadero St. ...it serves as a perfect location to sit and people watch, when the weather permits. I would definitely come back to this restaurant.

I had the Award Winning French Dip. It is very good and the caesar salad was terrific. I loved the croutons. The Jazzz band in the background was such a nice surprise/addition to the evening. This is a pricey restaurant, but nice ambience.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
