great place to share

We had eaten at enough touristy places on the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf So we went to Hillstone and ordered the French Dip and the Thai Steak salad and shared. If you are overwhelmed by the pier crowd, try Hillstone. It is just across the main road and while you a still a couple of steps from the sea side, it is definitely a different experience. Got there for coffee and regretted to not be hungry as food look very fresh and good. Particularly the artichoke.

We stopped at Hillstone just after being on the Alcatraz trip, as it's pretty much just across the road from pier 33. It's a sports bar come restaurant, ambience is good with an open flame fire, chill out music and very friendly and attentive staff. We both had their cheeseburgers, cooked just as we asked for with fries. Very fresh,... More

This place is Awesome. The French dip is to die for. So good we went back twice in our 3 day stay in San Francisco. Not pretentious, just great food served by great friendly staff. Would recommend to everyone that doesn't want to go to touristy places. Close to fishermans Wharf.

If you like bacon - and we like bacon - this is the clam chowder for you. So good. It has crispy bacon, and is rich and buttery without being a grease pit. I will dream about this clam chowder. Also equally great was the seared tuna salad. It was perfect! I may just dream about this salad as well!... More

Our dear friends picked this place to take us to for just being friends. How nice is that? They made the reservations and we were seated right away in a comfortable booth. The female server presented herself right away, taking our drink order and outlining the specials of the evening. I had the Caesar's Salad which was tastefully done having... More

We stopped at Hillstone for lunch after visiting Alcatraz. It's right near the pier (across the street, not waterfront.) This place has a casual but upscale feel to it, with lots of natural light. We sat at the bar so we could see the playoffs. We started with spinach artichoke dip and top shelf margaritas. Both awesome! We split the... More

This restaurant is very good and offers options for everyone. The chips for an appetizer are great and the burgers are good too. The people in my party had a variety of food and it was all good. It is a bit more expensive, you should make a reservation and dress up.

Every time we go into San Francisco for an event, we go here for dinner. We are never let down, either by the meal or the service. We usually start with the spinach and artichoke dip, which is spiced up with sour cream and salsa to go with it. My wife and I both had a rib eye, mine was... More

There were 6 people in our group. Two people ordered non-alcoholic drinks that were $10 each and tasted like medicine, one tasted better than the other which was ordered at a different time. Burgers/sandwiches/salads were about $20-22 which was a ridiculous price compared to the amount of food served. There was not much in terms of selections. The food tasted... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
