What a gem

A German theme greets when you enter Leopold. You're seated at a table for two along side other tables. This is not a problem because the atmosphere is such that people talk to each other. The food is delicious. The beer selection is wide and good. It's a very popular place and deservedly so.

We were at Leopold's on May 31, 2015 for dinner. A bit like stepping back in time, due to the decor and server attire. Noisy when we arrived because of a large group, the level abated when they left. Pleasant experience overall. Our most interesting selection was a shared vegetable strudel as a salad.

Glad I arrived early because the place filled up quickly. Casual venue. Small. Happy, somewhat noisy, crowd. Had vegetable strudel appetizer, jaegerschnitzel entree, and apfel strudel for dessert. All very good. The spaetzle were so good got an order to take home with me. Tried the Stiegl lager - liked it very much. No real German food to be had... More

Stumbled upon this restaurant last night. I'm always interested in Austrian food abroad - it's hard to get right it seems. But I was very impressed with the schnitzel at Leopold's! It was nice and thin, just great! The potato salad was a bit watery, but the cucumber salad was good. We also had the chicken soup, and the kasespatzle.... More

Great atmosphere, service and food. Large beer menu and serve cider which is a plus for me. Will definitely return next time I'm in San Francisco.

This place is great. I've only been here twice, but I loved it each time. The decor may be a little gratuitous (waiters/waitresses in lederhosen and dirndls), but the food is great. Don't look at the menu, just order the weiner schnitzel with lingon berries. It was great both times I had it and it will be great for you.... More

My only regret is that I was unable to return here for another meal It was a long walk from the financial district, up and down San Francisco's hills so my appetite was reenforced. There were only a few folks who reached the restaurant before I did and I was invited to sit anywhere. The restaurant has rather large booths,... More

Read a lot of good reviews before going to Leopold's in March 2015. Atmosphere and food were really good. Even had a chance to practice german language with our server. Highly recommended.

I little taste of Germany, Austria and eastern Europe right here in San Francisco. Had the house sausage appetizer, Weiner schnitzel and dark German beer and left completely satisfied with a huge smile. Will definitely go back and recommend this place to all. All the dishes looked excellent and the atmosphere is authentic.

Me and my husband went to Leopold's in November 2014. We loved it all! The atmosphere is fun and loud, the staff is service minded and friendly, the Bavarian beer is good and the food is just amazing! I had the "Braised Beef Short Rib" and I loved every bite of it. The meat, the gruyere mashed potatoes, the sauce,... More

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
