Very very good

Don't miss their range of pastas. We had a fantastic carbonara prepared in a refreshing new manner. Service was solid and they had a good selection of local brews. Each course was solid. Definite don't miss if in San Fran and in the mood for Italian.

We started with Fried squash blossom then Bucatini with pistachio, Raviolo di Ricotta and Agnolotti del plin con sugo d'arrosto. The main dish is Bistecca alla Fiorentina ( T-bone Steak Fiorentine for 3 0r 4), the best we have in the States compatible to what we had in Milan. Red inside but nicely grilled outside. We were treated with Pizza... More

The restaurant has a nice vibe, a little upmarket but the food was not much different from any other Italian restaurant, with the exception of the starter. For the main course we had a vegetarian pasta, foccacia and a vegetarian pizza. The pasta portion was a bit on the small side and the taste was nothing exceptional for the price.... More

Cotogna is Italian for quince and Quince is the Michelin two stared restaurant next door. Both have Michael Tusk as the chef. Cotogna is more rustic Italian and the menu is a la carte. Having said that, strap yourself in because the pasta is mind blowing. We were fortunate to try four pasta dishes with friends over lunch and each... More

A great place slightly reminds me of the Rive Cafe in London for cooking style but does have a style all of its own. Meals here never disappoint though sometimes working out the best things on the menu is a challenge.

We ordered a salad, but never ordered for two. We had a nice pizza. The products were very fresh. The restaurant's ambiance was nice and the chefs and the manager are attentive, but our waiter was not the friendliest. We were shocked by the bill. We were charged for a double sized salad, we asked the waiter and she was... More

Cotogna is my favorite casual Italian in San Francisco. I have been to this restaurant twenty times and it is consistently great. I mostly like to go with friends and share the different pasta dishes.

We had a Sunday prefix menu for USD55. The Escargot (appetizer ) had no flavor, the bean soup was the only good dish, the entree pork belly had almost all fat with little meat for two people and was very tough and hard to chew. They did not serve us steak knife and offered us no bread. The dessert is... More

Reserved a table for a late lunch as as we had a late evening flight home. Walked in to simple but classy environment with huge wood burning spit/oven, so could not wait to taste. Three in our party and we shared a few appetizers, then some outstanding pastas ~ overwhelmingly fresh and deliscious, one main course and one pizza...and felt... More

We liked the vibe in this restaurant - buzzing, trendy, spectacular flower arrangements, lovely bread but..... the food was disappointing. My starter of beetroot and additions could have been thrown on the plate in 10 seconds - main course of the halibut with porcini mushrooms was miniscule and dressed with a smear of cauliflower puree and ?nuts - it wasn't... Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
