Flavors and food just right, service flawed

Our mushroom pizza was excellent. The crust and toppings complimented one another and it arrived hot and delicious. The rest of our dishes were well done. The somme was helpful and the wine a good value. Service is a web of touches by the staff in my experience. Being welcomed is the first... read more

A rustic atmosphere and a crowd more local than tourist. Sunday is a fixed menu, which offered a rather bizarre but excellent 4 course meal. Lots of good California wines. Service was efficient and attentive without being obtrusive. This is a very popular place, so reserve well ahead of time.

We didn't have a reservation but turned up at 5pm and got one of the tables outside, which are on a first come first served basis. Absolutely loved the food. Great choice and very good quality. Friendly staff, slightly on the expensive side but worth it.

I go to Cotogna frequently and have always enjoyed the meal and the ambiance. They have an excellent Prizzo Fisso (set meal) for lunch and it is always great. Suggest reservations for dinner, but if you get there before 5:30pm, they will usually seat you.

My girlfriend and I celebrated our two year anniversary here last week. After making an Open Table reservation, they had a great table ready on time with custom placemats wishing is a Happy Anniversary. The waitress was great with food and wine suggestions. And one of the best parts is the value for the quality of food - almost unbeatable.... More

We loved the farm egg raviolo di ricotta. We ordered one to share but we wished we'd skipped the cheese course and ordered one for each of us! Great bread, soup with sausage. The sausage and leeks course was the weakest at our visit. We didn't enjoy the communal dining much since they sat us very closely next to a... More

I really hesitated about going to Cotogna's on a Sunday night for their prix fixe menu, I made the reservation, cancelled it, re-made it and I am SO glad I did. It was by far one of the best meals I've ever had. I let them know in advance that I was allergic to shellfish and they accommodated me without... More

Very nice restaurant. Loved the communal table. You can't miss: the broccoli pizza and huge ravioli with poached egg on top. Wouldn't order dessert though, very plain and unflavored. Also, have an orange blossom tea to accompany your meal, or share a bottle of Maremma Toscana red wine with your friends. Very friendly staff. Would recommend to call beforehand because... More

Awesome little spot off the main tourist path. We were recommended this place by a local who lives nearby and it didn't disappoint. The wood fired grill is a nice treat that doesn't often feature as the main stove for a Italian restaurant. We didn't have a reso so we put our name down and they called when ready -... More

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
