A SF version of Bocca di Lupo

We had a lovely early lunch in the calm of Cotogna after coming from Union Sq through Chinatown. Tasty Italian similar for us Londoners to one of our London favourites, Bocca Di Lupo.

Cotogna was highly recommended by a business associate who made our reservation. We were warmly greeted on a Friday night and seated in less than 10 minutes. The place was packed, lively, and loud. Tables are very close together. Our server was very good -- attentive and helpful. The noise level was high enough that it was difficult to hear... More

Bit disappointed with this meal. We got off to a bad start as we had to wait 40 mins for our table. Food was average - restaurant was very busy and they struggled to cope with the numbers.

Friendly, efficient service and really good value beverage menu including interesting non alcoholic options. The room is beautifully staged and features a large wood fired oven. Great bar and a buzzy ambiance. The real star here is the food....a mix of classic and unusual dishes featuring pristine ingredients, structured but unfussy presentation and clean, distinctive flavours. Only the Secondi exhibited... More

We had some problems finding a comfortble spot with a 2-year old, but the staff was understanding and let us take turns at the counter until our table outside becme free. (The place isNOT recommende if you are with a 2-year old, but we had no choice.) Sitting at the couter, I could see the pizza being bked in the... More

Great italian food for lunch. My husband and I shared chopped salad, FYI it is a huge portion. I think 4 people could share that salad. We loved the Raviolo di ricotta and Prosciutto, fontina & farm egg pizza. Great flavors and fresh pasta.

Great service, average food. Loved the manager and our server. First bottle of $150 wine was corked which they recognized without me telling them and gladly replaced. Gnocchi and pasta dishes were too flour tasting and bland. Unimpressed; didn't even eat half of it. Maybe we ordered wrong. The lamb shank and pizza at the other tables looked great! Not... More

Our mushroom pizza was excellent. The crust and toppings complimented one another and it arrived hot and delicious. The rest of our dishes were well done. The somme was helpful and the wine a good value. Service is a web of touches by the staff in my experience. Being welcomed is the first, getting a suitable table and then help... More

A rustic atmosphere and a crowd more local than tourist. Sunday is a fixed menu, which offered a rather bizarre but excellent 4 course meal. Lots of good California wines. Service was efficient and attentive without being obtrusive. This is a very popular place, so reserve well ahead of time.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
