SImply genius

This is what dining at a 3 Michelin star restaurant should be like - every course was so creative, delicious, different, and unique. The décor is clean and simple but not lacking is character. Benu was amazing as was too beexpected with Cory Lee at the helm. Every course was prepared well and thought out. The highlight of the meal for me as silly as it might seem was the beggars purse dumpling it was delicious and fun. Service was impeccable. I do have a severe critiscm though. I don't mind spending money on... More

The room is very simple which in itself is not objectionable but it felt crowded and was very noisy creating an experience at odds with both the food and the price. The service was very good but lacked the polish that is a given at three Michelin starred restaurants elsewhere - maybe it is just the more casual west coast... More

What a treat! This place is very special and one of our must go to restaurants in SF. It's not the traditional tasting menu so don't go if that's what you are looking for. It's clever, modern and even the wine pairing is creative and different.

Quite an experience. We had the now non-optional tasting menu with the "wine" pairings. The choice of dishes was exceptional and the different tastes were fascinating. One of the dishes, the Caviar, winter melon and chicken was one of the most beautiful dishes I have ever seen (although not exactly copious!). The service was perfect and all the staff were... More

Heard good things about Corey Lee the chef so we were glad to get a reservation here. A lot of the cuisine has Asian influences, loved the soup dumplings with plenty of opportunity to try some good Sake. Dessert I had the Sake Sherbert and the fresh dried yuba. Had a great tasting menu experience.

Where do you look for restaurant recommendations? Michelin? Zagat? Yelp? Local newspaper guides, if there is one? For me, TripAdvisor is *NOT* near the top of the list. Why? simple - too many crappy restaurants near tourist attractions get the visibility/recommendations that they don't deserve. That said, do your research, then dine at Benu, if it is for you. You... Wow, last night we went to Benu for a special dinner and it was more than special! We had not been in a couple of years yet they assigned the same lovely server we had before and remembered (I am sure with the aid of their computers) that one of us liked still and one liked sparkling water. Sometimes the... More

My wife and I came here for a special date night. I have to admit, our initial impression upon entering Benu wasn't the best: the decor is very sparse, almost office/warehouse/industrial, but that's just about the only thing about Benu that didn't feel incredibly intimate and unique. I decided to take the plunge and go for the wine pairing menu.... More

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
