Benu is the French Laundry of San Francisco

Benu is a great restaurant and equal to the French Laundry in the Napa Valley. As a matter of fact, the owner-chef, Cory Lee, worked for ten years at the French Laundry. There's more Asian influence in the dishes here than at the French Laundry, but there are a lot of similarities: great food and many courses. I think we... More

We came here awhile ago when Benu was two stars but I'm sure it has only improved. I wanted to post this belated review to highlight the care that the restaurant provides for all their diners. We came for my husbands birthday with 2 out of town friends. I was expecting at the time and noted this on our reservation... More

I chose this restaurant for my beau's birthday and it did not disappoint. The decor is modern with clean lines. The service is wonderful with the 17 courses paced nicely. The highlights were the thousand year old quail egg potage, whiting with horseradish (fish was slightly fried), asparagus with sesame (simple yet so tasty), foie gras xiao long bao (I'm... More

It's not often I visit Michelin 3 Star restaurants, French Laundry being the last. A client of mine insisted (and offered to pay) so I did. Twist my arm. Knowing chef Corey Lee, former head chef of The French Laundry was here, made it a no brainer. The presentations are stunning. The service was almost perfect but not quite 3... More

My wife and myself experienced the ultimate artistery of food presentation with Benu. A fantastic experience of asian inspired food presentation. Except for the Sake and beer to go with the food the experience was outstanding. The price of the tasting menu and wine pairing was a bit stiff compared to european michelin starred restaurants of the same standard.

Benu. Benu, Benu. The first thing you notice is the beautiful and peaceful dining room. The second is that the staff is always attentive but never intrusive. Then the food begins to come and you are in for a mutli-hour culinary journey that is in the top three in the US (along with French Laundry and Eleven Madison). Dinner here... More

Creative menu and presentation. Literally every dish was delicious, the flavor combinations were innovative, the wine pairings were excellent, and the serving plates were funational art. The service was professional and discreet.

On a weekend Spring trip to the city, we were looking forward to our first visit to Benu and we were not disappointed. Booking a late seating one Saturday night, we ordered the extended tasting menu with beverage pairings. As they came to out table, every dish brought with it a little surprise both in presentation and flavour. The Thousand... More

So I must be fair. The restaurant is sophisticated. The service is great. The food is very elegant. Let’s not take any of that away from Benu. Overall, I think that the experience fell slightly short of my expectations but it is an experience that I would certainly recommend enjoying at least once. Finding the entrance was a bit of... Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
