We were able to get a reservation only for a weekday. Very impressive minimalist modern Asian themed decor, dining room through a Japanese garden. The small dishes that started the dinner were beautiful and outstanding, the chicken egg as well as the wrapped lobster literally burst in the mouth with flavor. Though all dishes were presented beautifully, the latter items... More

For pure foodists, Benu is a must-visit. Tucked into a small alley, the restaurant entrance magically transports one outside the city to a remote village townhouse in a faraway locale. The interior is modernist, minimal, and with an Asian flair. The service is extremely competent and from the answers I received to questions posed, the servers know their stuff as... More

Went for a joint birthday/anniversary treat and loved it. This was an experience not to be forgottten. The tasting menu was fantastic and every course was explained in detail by the waiting staff who were very attentive trhoughout our time at the restaurant. Worth the money and will be recommending to friends and family.

Recently dined here with my wife. The menu was prix fixe, and each of the ~20 courses were unique, beautifully presented and delicious. We selected the beverage pairings, which included sake, sour beer and ~8 great wines. Our sommelier was skillful, providing a great description and backstory on each beverage. For many of the wines, my wife followed up with... More

Yes, your wallet will hurt after this meal but its worth every penny. Corey Lee's creative (but small) a la carte menu is delicious. The ambiance of the restaurant is simple and urban with hints of Asian influences. The service is the best of the best...attentive, prompt and kind. We ordered 6 dishes between the two of us and ate... More

Simple sound bites -- though tastes come from diverse sources, the Chinese influence dominates. 18-20 small courses: the "small delicacies" are not all that smaller than the ten "mains". We could be labeled "foodies", and would rank this in our top 20 meals. Many, many highpoints -- almost all of the small delicacies, the matsutake broth, the abalone, the faux... More

My son and my self went to have the tasting menu at Benu restaurant, recently award with 3 star Michelin They gave us a nice welcome and took our jackets to be more relax. The architecture is simple and sober. The distance of the tables is perfect and the environment it is more formal than casual. We had 6 small... More

I can see why this can be a polarizing restaurant experience. Our group of 4 did not come away as big fans. Clearly, it's a unique dining experience that includes an incredible number of courses of carefully prepared foods you've never eaten before (and may never eat again). But we enjoyed Gary Danko and The French Laundry much more. Maybe... More

The ambiance is subdued, the servers polite and professional. There is a fixed tasting menu which started with "delicacies" and then had about a dozen more entries following. We thought there would be one or two "delicacies", but there were many of them, served one after another. We ordered the flight of wine to accompany the meal, so the cost... More

I dined at Benu shortly after it opened, before it was formally crowned 2 and 3 Michelin stars. The restaurant decor is casual but chic. The fact that you can see the kitchen from the street is pretty cool. Parking in this area is a nightmare though so thank goodness they offer valet. As for the dishes, the tasting menu... More

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
