Charming Restaurant with Absolutely Delicious Food

Frances was around the corner from our hotel and looked surprisingly busy at 5:00 PM on a weekday so we thought we'd give it a go. Turns out it's one of the hottest tickets in town and near impossible to book [no surprise once you've tried it!] but luckily we walked in and found they had two seats at the... More

I've now eaten at Frances twice. The first time I was a guest of someone else, the second time I wanted introduce friends who I knew would appreciate a restaurant that had really wonderful food, excellent service and a thoughtful atmosphere. This is an intimate restaurant that doesn't seat too many people at once. Standard dining times are often booked... More

Heard it's not easy to get the short term reservation. Just tried my luck to have direct walk-in tonight and it worked! Begin with the Avocado as warm up and accompany Kale salad as appetizer. Refreshing and delicious. Followed with Sonoma Duck breast as entrees and sides with asparagus. A true satisfaction. The service is one of the best. As... More

I was visiting some dear friends in S.F. and one of them snagged us a table at Frances. The service, food, and atmosphere were all top-notch. We enjoyed the house "wine by the ounce" and had fantastic food. We started by sharing some beignets and the chicory salad. Both were unusual and fantastic. We all had the duck and all... More

A special evening out for my wife's birthday. The staff is well trained and very good. It's a small restaurant and they have to be very efficient to deliver the meals expeditiously. the food was very good, especially the duck breast. Interesting wine service: you only pay for what you drink.

This place is worth the effort, if any! We got lucky and booked through Open Table the night before as they sometimes reserve spots or have openings due to cancellations. I heard there can be a two month wait. Earlier dinner times are easier to find. The place is cozy and you could walk right by it and miss it... More

All of the dishes here are incredible. The professionalism and care that go into each wonderfully complex morsel, and the extraordinarily friendly waitstaff, make Frances worth a visit to San Francisco (as if there weren't enough other reasons to visit). The new chef, Michaela, has preserved some of Melissa Perello's former triumphs and added her own new raft of brilliant... More

I had been trying to make reservations here for a long while. I finally figured out that I needed to aim for a time like 6 p.m. on a random Tuesday. It was worth it--and given how crowded it was when we went, I could see why it was so hard to get reservations. We went here for a belated... More

Frances is an intimate restaurant located in The Castro. It has a neighborhood feel and its small charm runs contrary to its Michelin starred food. The chef, Melissa Perello is one of only a handful of women with a Michelin Star. The facility is clean and comfortable. The lighting is excellent - kind of warms you up. There are not... More

Staying in The Castro

Neighborhood Profile
The Castro
A flourishing commercial area that acts as San Francisco's LGBT community center and cultural heart, the Castro is a neighborhood welcome to everyone. As one of the first predominantly LGBT neighborhoods in the United States and currently its largest, it remains one of the epicenters of activism in the nation. Grand theaters and glitzy shops now compete with bars and fashionable eateries for attention, drawing visitors from around the world to the bright rainbow flag acting as its beacon.
