Delicious and clever!

Small restaurant with a good vibe. My daughter and I went for a Sunday evening meal and still the place was packed (reservations a must) with a good vibe. Menu is seasonal and all worked well (if a little bit salty for my taste). There is a clever system for the house wine - you pay what... read more

We were staying in the Castro neighbourhood and went to this restaurant having seen it mentioned in Lonely Planet. It was packed and clearly very popular with locals, so it was a good job that we had booked. The tables are packed in and the staff could be seen moving them to allow people to squeeze into the bench seats... More

Was in San Francisco with a colleague on business and had dinner here. Small but well curated menu. We had a kale salad and spinach soup for starters, both excellent, and beef and duck breast entrees, the latter being superb, with a fantastic bottle of local pinot noir. $250 bill including tips. Definitely recommended.

On a recent business trip to San Francisco, I tried Frances for the first time after a long day of travel. Despite being tired and famished, my visit to Frances was one of the best dining experiences I've had in San Francisco. The dining room is small, cozy, and very inviting. Service was exceptional--cheerful, prompt, and unobtrusive. Although the menu... More

I absolutely loved dining in this restaurant. The restaurant itself is nestled in a quieter neighborhood and features simple yet lovely decor. We ordered the Applewood Smoked Bacon Beignets and Panisse Frites to start and both were to die for. As my main dish I ordered the steak which was also delicious and cooked perfectly (slightly chewy but I didn't... More

Frances was around the corner from our hotel and looked surprisingly busy at 5:00 PM on a weekday so we thought we'd give it a go. Turns out it's one of the hottest tickets in town and near impossible to book [no surprise once you've tried it!] but luckily we walked in and found they had two seats at the... More

I've now eaten at Frances twice. The first time I was a guest of someone else, the second time I wanted introduce friends who I knew would appreciate a restaurant that had really wonderful food, excellent service and a thoughtful atmosphere. This is an intimate restaurant that doesn't seat too many people at once. Standard dining times are often booked... More

Heard it's not easy to get the short term reservation. Just tried my luck to have direct walk-in tonight and it worked! Begin with the Avocado as warm up and accompany Kale salad as appetizer. Refreshing and delicious. Followed with Sonoma Duck breast as entrees and sides with asparagus. A true satisfaction. The service is one of the best. As... More

I was visiting some dear friends in S.F. and one of them snagged us a table at Frances. The service, food, and atmosphere were all top-notch. We enjoyed the house "wine by the ounce" and had fantastic food. We started by sharing some beignets and the chicory salad. Both were unusual and fantastic. We all had the duck and all... More

Staying in The Castro

Neighborhood Profile
The Castro
A flourishing commercial area that acts as San Francisco's LGBT community center and cultural heart, the Castro is a neighborhood welcome to everyone. As one of the first predominantly LGBT neighborhoods in the United States and currently its largest, it remains one of the epicenters of activism in the nation. Grand theaters and glitzy shops now compete with bars and fashionable eateries for attention, drawing visitors from around the world to the bright rainbow flag acting as its beacon.
