'Old school' done right

From the time you walk in until you leave (full) you're treated like the most important customer they've ever served. A jazz trio plays in the piano lounge but you can still hear a conversation. The steaks are excellent cuts dry aged and seasoned well. It's not cheap but you definitely get your... read more

Overly hyped and praised by many. Does have old-school steakhouse atmosphere and cocktails with sidecars a real treat as they have all but disappeared. But, we came for steak and were sorely disappointed (lamb chops got a 4 though). How can you promote a $54 "Harris" steak as "thick"when it's maybe 3/4 of an inch? Impossible to cook rare or... We went here for an early dinner. It is an older type of restaurant. Lots of circular booths, white tablecloths, and great cocktails. The bar is vintage too. Really nice place that hails from a time when beef was king and great service was standard. We were not disappointed. We had the wedge salads (big enough to share), onion soup... More

Menu here is fairly typical of a steak restaurant. The place is well-appointed and the service is okay, but one item was left off in our order. The meat was very good and the fish delicious. Our birthday guest received a lovely dessert with his name inscribed in chocolate sauce. It was disappointing to be offered the horseradish sauce/sour cream... More

Three couples on vacation dined recently. All six meals excellent. Steaks chosen ranged from the fillets to the New York strips, each done well over a variety of preferences. Appetizers very good, crab cakes a bit mushy, with too much filler, onion soup one of the best I've ever had - no smothering cheese, just dusted with Parmesan. Wine list... More

Visited as a couple midweek. 2 drinks, 2 steaks and 2 deserts came to $160. Was expensive but the restaurant is lovely, the bar area had a piano player. The steaks were cooked very well and I would recommend the Crem brûlée. We were given a complimentary plate of cookies for our anniversary by the waiter which was sweet. Would... More

We shared a friend's birthday at this classic steakhouse in SF. The service was good but not great (they missed a dessert order by one of the four of us). The decor and atmosphere are elegant and the ambiance quiet enough to allow conversation. My sweetbreads appetizer was good but not great, just a little on the dry side. My... More

One of the absolute best steaks I have had here in the states. We started off with crabcakes and Hanzell Chardonnay perfect match and very delicious. Then we had different cuts of steaks from Porterhouse to Harri's cut, everybody was amazed and the tenderness and well prep of the steak absolutely great. The only reason not to go for 5... More

This is a great restaurant! The food was really good and my whole family enjoyed it a lot. The cuts were perfect and the sides delicious!! Too full for desert ….but what can I say? No complaints here……:)

We could easy write a poor review for the food that was served on Monday night , the chef was off his game , and my food was not up to the hype of the steakhouse , However when it's wrong it's how it's put right which is how I look at it , And this is was 5 star... More

Staying in Nob Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Nob Hill
Swanky and stylish, Nob Hill sits in the heart of the city and is home to amazing architecture and views. The hike to the top can be a challenging workout for those who forego a cable car ride, but they will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture adorning its peak. Originally populated with mansions after the Gold Rush, most if not all were devastated in the 1906 earthquake and fire that followed. Luckily all is not lost; storied hotels and Grace Cathedral surround Huntington Park. Having a drink or dinner while taking in the sunset and views at the "top of the Mark" is tough to beat.
