Fun for drinks, great appetizers

We dropped in for a few drinks in this beautiful location. It has an art nouveau style and the bar décor emphasizes its liquid content (I can't really explain this, but I have never noted this in a bar--and I have been in a few!). We had the Charred Octopus and the Bonbons off the appetizer menu... read more

We called in to Gitanes for a late night drink after returning from our Alcatraz tour and the Pier 39 area. We were directed there by a maitre d' at a nearby restaurant and were delighted to find their beautiful bar area. The range of drinks on offer is very extensive and the staff were all charming. It made a... More

Best thing here is the bacon wrapped figs. Heaven! Nice attractive long bar on main floor, cozy tables upstairs for dinner. Probably best for parties up to 4 unless you plan far enough in advance.

My husband and I had dinner here and were both very impressed. It's a beautiful art nouveau atmosphere. The quiet dining area is separate from the bar area which can get noisy. We had the bonbons for appetizers and the little gems salad. Both were delicious. He had the lamb duo and I had the scallop, small portions but really... More

Although we ate on the patio, which is not romantic--it's on a narrow alley and nice but not like the beautiful, small dining room upstairs--we still enjoyed the atmosphere and experience. Our server was very good. He made sure our friend has a "perfect" perfect Manhattan. We had some great appetizers, and the scallops and lamb (what me and my... More

Gitane is down a rather unprepossessing alley but is well worth finding. Having booked on line we had been told there were no tables at 7:30 and settled on 6:30 only to find plenty of tables still empty at 8:00 but that may have been a system fault. We sat outside and the service was attentive and well informed. The... More

We both liked the feel of the alley location, and inside dining was a little tight. Once we moved away from the crowd, our dining experience got better. Great service, food was good. Order their specialty, and it will be good.

Probably one of the most romantic settings is Gitane, a small Spanish/French/Mediterranean country style restaurant on a small lane in downtown San Francisco, with an ambience of romance and elegance. The menu and wine list is extensive, with southwest European Gypsy cuisine mixed with French, Castilian and North African influences. This is the place to go on for a romantic... More

This place was ok. The cocktails were terrible. The wine was just ok..probably below average for SF. Service at the bar wasn't that great. Service at the table was better. But, it is a very romantic restaurant. It's cozy and unique.

I stopped here with my cousin for drinks. We didn't order any food, but the cocktails were fantastic. We ordered the first round off of the menu, but the next three rounds were drink that the bartenders created for us. Each one was delicious! We really enjoyed our evening here.
