Hidden gem

Hidden in a side street, so you really have to go and look for it. The food is truly homecooked, like the minestrone soup we had as a starter, that was so well flavored with celery and a bit of lemonzest. Our friends took us to this restaurant for our first visit. Although it was originally a pub it is now an Inn and restaurant. It dates from 1914, I believe. We were seated at a table in what used to be living room of the old inn. Beautiful woodwork and a very comforting atmosphere. The food was superb, the service... More

We visited for dinner after a very long trip to arrive at Bar Harbor. The staff were great, including our hostess, our hostess "in training", and Chef Don. The food was outstanding, especially the crab stuffed salmon special. We also enjoyed the cioppino and the baked haddock which were superb. The steaks were excellent and coiuld be cut with a... I was really confused why this was almost a 5 star rating. My inn stay experience was significantly better than the pub experience. Since we were staying here we decided to grab dinner. The scallop hash was pretty decent but my boyfriend did not like his fish at all whatsoever. Living in the city with the largest fish port makes... More

This is a little off the beaten path in Bar Harbor, for we were looking for a nice dinner on the 5th of July after a hectic holiday on the 4rth. We were not disappointed with any aspect of the Pub. The restaurant is small and cozy, busily decorated in the manner of a English local. The clientele was a... More

The Black Friar Inn is off one of the busy streets in town so it is a hidden gem. My wife and I enjoyed our entrees. I had the special which was salmon stuffed with crabmeat. It was so tasty I ate it in less than 5 minutes including the carrots and potatoes. The dessert was a homemade piece of... More

Had a dinner and breakfast here and both were great. Varied menu and cocktails. The waitress and bartender was wonderful as was the owner/manager. Next time in Bar Harbor will make sure to stay here

Having come to BH for over two decades, it doesn't take us long to get our fill of the usual dining experiences. We had a blast here; the pub feel, the quality food, the relaxed service. Not cheap. But worth it. It was an Experience.

My husband and I stayed at the Black Friar in 2011. We adore this establishment. This summer we brought our family to Bar Harbor and we brought them to dinner at The Black Friar (June 24, 20015). Our experience was as special as we remembered. Tom, the host, was so friendly and welcoming. We started with a drink at the... More
