Best Japanese food I've had in the states

Hands down this was the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. We heard about it from a local bartender and he didn't steal us wrong! The place was packed with locals. I recommend reservations. I don't do sushi but I could've had a plate full of it here. My husband ordered it and then ordered... read more

This restaurant came highly recommended therefore we had great expectations. The food was good but not as amazing as we thought it would be, the service was below average. The fish was very fresh and nicely cooked.

It took 45 minutes to be seated. They made us close out our drink tab before they would take us back. Our server was nice. But the overall experience sucked. We won't be back.

For my husband and I, a trip to Kauai begins and ends with dinner at Kintaro. We rent a condo a couple blocks, so it's an easy walk. We love the Hanalei Roll, and usually back it up with an island fish dinner. The food is good, but the place is also wonderful. The clientele consists of the greatest mix... More

We had a wonderful experience at Restaurant Kintaro. The Teppan Yaki chef was very good. The service is excellent and the food great. We had the Teppan Yaki filet and you could cut it with your chop stick, it was that tender. Even though they are a Japanese restaurant they also serve fried rice which is also excellent. Probably one of... More

This place is always jammed, but well worth the wait. You can order regular or teppan style. We opted for the regular menu. Our party of 10 was started off with plates of delicious, hot fried wontons and a mustard, soy dipping sauce. The won tons are made by the owners factory. Sushi was incredibly fresh, and my grandson declared... More

Don't get why people line up for this place. I had issue with the food only. Staff, service location, decor, etc was all fine and people seem to be enjoying themselves, but the food was just not good. It was poor Japanese food and although we had wanted to order the sashimi, we stopped. The recommend rolls were poor. The... More

Kintaro was very close to where we were staying. We pulled into the parking lot at 5 after a hectic day, to find the restaurant closed. We were about to leave when a waiter saw us as he was going to work, and said. "We open at 5:30. It's worth the wait." He was correct. To start there was a... More

So many good reviews that I expected the best diner of my life... And I'm not very impressed. The spicy tuna was not spicy, the fried wonton was good but the sushi wasn't that good: no flavor, no texture and too big. Don't forget to make a reservation.

Always have one meal at a Kintaro teppanyaki table during our annual visit to Kauai. We've always had a great time with the others seated at our table.
