Average, but not much other choice

we went here twice, the food was better than the place looks. I had Hawaiian stew one night and a salad the next. It was raining so hard that night we were happy to find a place to eat and get out of the rain!

First, this is NOT a foodie haven. What you will find is down to earth good grub, with caring service and good value. I found myself going back three times. I had the Loco Mock, (gravy on the side) and later had a light breakfast and the next day a burger. The staff makes this place a delight. Notably, Ryan,... More

The food was unappealing and lacked flavor. The soda was flat. The server was nice, but the fish was so bad it was even disguisable with hot sauce. The hamburgers were bad also.

Although the place feels ruin down and dirty, the food was pretty decent, with a nice French dip and chicken teri burger. The service was very friendly, which went a long way to improving things. It's just a diner, but a good stop off in Puna.

Great gathering place. Food is very good, atmosphere need improvement but all in all, not bad. Love sitting at the bar and relaxing and talking story with locals.

Well - great Apple pie, coffee was good and the service was good old style diner style. A lively establishment that has style and quality eating at a reasonable price. Clean operating toilets would have given it 5 stars.

We ate here our first night on the island, exhausted from 12 hours of traveling. The service was fast the staff very friendly and the food was good. Even though the bar next door was rocking (it was Saturday night) the restaurant was quiet enough for easy conversation. Prices were reasonable and even though an earlier review posted a mandatory... This was our second time stopping for lunch at the Black Rock in Pahoa. On the previous occasion (last March) we had enjoyed the place, but recent reviews suggested that it had gone downhill (like the lava which was stalled just above the town when we were there this time!). We were pleasantly surprised to find that the place was... More

Food here was so-so. Service was ... okay. We were surprised to see an 18% gratuity tacked on to our bill. Jacked up the price quite a bit on an otherwise affordable meal. We ate at quite a few meals on the island and didn't notice a mandatory gratuity before...
