This is a chef with attitude! Paulo is known as a unique personality in the area. His food is superb! The flavors are sublime. He uses what is in season to create traditional Italian (from Livorno) cuisine. The Fruit of the Sea Pasta is unbelievable! I also love the squid ink pasta with whatever he's got it paired with. Come... More

THE BEST DINNER FOOD AROUND....Run by an actual chef with garden to table ingredients. Italian cuisine with the quaintest atmosphere. The Chef KNOWS his ingredients and won't dare offend an ingredient by paring it with one that isn't complimentary, so please don't take it personal if he won't prepare your food as you request. ONO BRAH, ONO!!!

Paolos consistently serves delicious food, from the homemade minestrone soup to the main course and the deserts. We make it a point to eat here several times each trip. Bring your own wine, no over charge for bad wines this way. And if you eat the soup, the homemade delicious bread, the main course you are bound to be stuffed.... More

My husband and I visited Paolo's for my second visit and his first. It lived up to its reputation as an Italian gem in the heart of the charming time warp of a village of Pahoa. Paolo, the owner, offers a fairly ambitious farm to table menu with more choices than you would expect at such a small place. The... More

I walked into the restaurant and found out BYOB(bring your own booze). Had to go to the market to get a bottle of wine. I didn't mind that. Got a glass of ice water an it was warm. The waitress had said ice is a commodity. Asked for the menu. There was no menu? The waitress had read what the... More

We were so lucky to come across Paolo's little restaurant. It is truly a gem. Paolo shops for best ingredients the morning of, and then cooks everything from scratch including pasta himself. I am a big italian food fan and what Paolo makes is a true Toscan food. I am shocked that the place does not have huge lines every... More

There are few fine places to eat on the east side of Big Island, but Paolo's in Pahoa serves up fine fresh food every time. We called for a reservation on a Tues, and found out he was closed, but he went ahead and offered to open as, it was for a birthday celebration. Now that is something! His fish... More

There is no menu here, you are told what is available, all selections have the same price & choose from what is seasonal & available. Seems quite normal to me, I do not go out to eat frozen food anyway. There is always a soup served & fresh baked bread, with oil etc. it as & when we fancy something... More

This hidden gem of a restaurant was one of the highlights of our stay in the Pahoa area. It was our last night before heading back home, and the power in our neighborhood was knocked out by a traffic accident. So much for eating up all the leftovers in our fridge...we headed into Pahoa, a tiny, wild west, bo-ho kind... More

Great, surprising meals from an out of the way Gem. We are from Washington State and were pleasantly surprised with excellent ambiance and wonderfully cooked meals. Bring your own wine and plant yourself for the evening. Paolo himself comes around your table to chat. Service helpers are excellently trained and very friendly. No windows. If breezy, bring a jacket.
