It doesn't sound like our experience at Shaka was typical but after eating there we wished we had stayed hungry. The restaurant definitely has a local atmosphere, which we usually, enjoy but the parts we could see were dirty which makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. The service was very poor and the food was undercooked to the... More
Not much to choose from as far at eaterys go on this stretch of road. Friendly staff, good service and a decent meal. Menu has something for everyone.
The real reason I stopped was just for the novelty of eating at the southern most restaurant and bar in US (not including territories). It really is more like a sports bar than a restaurant, but worth the visit to say you did it...and buy a t-shirt :).
We were driving around the island when we realised we were hungry and hadn't seen anywhere to eat for quite some time, so we stopped here. Given that it has little in the way of competition for miles around, we wondered if we would find high prices and poor food, but this was definitely not the case. I was also... More
After reading these reviews we decided to try this place. As we were in Naalehu a few weeks earlier and passed it up for another restaurant in town we thought we’d try it on this trip. We were traveling from South Point and Green Sand Beach to Black Sand Beach and stopped at this local restaurant. We asked some of the locals on the street where we should eat and Shaka was one of the restaurants. The restaurant was filled with locals at the bar and the restaurant was noisy. We ordered two of the true... More
It is not fancy, it is not artdeco, it is not even “wait to be seated”, but they have a damn good food, and you can really feel how and why Naalehu is different from towns Kona or Hilo. It is the southeast point, but it is also native Hawaii. I give them a SHAKA :]
Don't let appearances put you off. The Shaka looks like a roadside bar in need of sprucing up a bit but once you get past this and go inside, the folk are friendly and the food outstanding. Surprisingly, the menu was quite extensive and very reasonably priced. I have eaten a lot of fish and chips in my time but... More
It doesn't look very impressive just driving up to it but the service and the food was very good. The atmosphere is fun-filled and upbeat. They had Kona Brewing "Lavaman" on tap which is a vry good Ale. There way of cooking Hot wings is delicious with a side of homemade Coleslaw and the Pulled Pork Tortillas are Tasty. Evidently... More
